While in the process of fitting a JD pup into the bridge of my Peavey Genny, I had to route a tiny bit of wood to get it to fit properly. In doing so, I discovered something. They call this basswood. If it is, its basswood sawdust. Or maybe wood chips. It looks like the stuff they sweep off the wood shop floor, mix with glue, and press into quot;woodquot;. And to add insult to injury . . . its not even painted. Its covered with a thin piece of black plastic veneer thats laminated to the body. Thats why it has the nice binding . . . to hide the plastic seam.
Oh well . . . at least it sounds good. Or I should say, the pups do. But as soon as I can afford it, I'm getting a quot;realquot; Tele.

dont let it kill your mojo, artie ... where the rubber hits the road, it's all about the sound

Yup . . . and thanks. This JD/AII Pro combo, I believe, has just become my favorite pups. Killer tone.

Don't let the little thing bother you brother...now for the good stuff...Is the JD able to keep up with a neck bucker in output?

Thanks. Actually, its an APS1 single-coil. It matches with the JD perfectly, but that may have something to do with my quot;sparkle-tonequot; mod. I was going to wait awhile to post anything about it, but perhaps I could do a quot;sneak-previewquot;.

Oh...thats the set up that JD uses! I thought you were using an Alnico II pro bucker...

Heh - heh . . . if I an get a drawing or two ready before my Granddaughters birthday party, I'll post 'em.
Well its been a while!
Can we see the sparkle-tone mod now please artie?

Sure. I posted this once before, but I think its one of those threads that references my dead server. Here's a quick refresher:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Sparkle-mod is just a quick and easy way to add a little quot;bridgequot; to the neck pup. I'll use a Tele as an example in order to keep it simple.
Here's a typical Tele wiring schematic:
Here's that same schematic with the quot;sparkle-modquot; added:
Note that the only difference is the addition of a cap and resistor between the hot lead of the bridge, and the top (unused) terminal of the tone control. The cap just quot;borrowsquot; a bit of the high-end from the bridge, and the resistor attenuates it so that we only borrow a smidgen. Note also that when the 3-way is in the bridge or middle position, that mod is shorted out, or bypassed.
Here's what the 3-way looks like in the neck-only position:
Now you can see how the bridge lends a little quot;sparklequot; to the neck.
Here's what a typical Tele wiring diagram, with sparkle-mod, would look like:
You can see how easy this is to add. I use a small quot;trim-potquot; for the resistor that I hide under the control plate. That way, I can dial-in the amount of quot;sparklequot; that I want to add. The difference this mod makes is subtle, but worth doing, to me. Its just another tone option.

Edit: btw - Since I first posted this, I've found that that resistor should probably be closer to the 250k - 500k range. Let me get back to you on that. A 500k or 1 meg trim pot would solve that issue though.
Cheers
options are always good

A little disappointment in my Genny construction.
