Maybe this is ordinary, but I've never seen it happen before. I was just gently thumb picking, and the string snapped from around the ball:I never break strings to begin with. This was just weird.
(Scared the beejeezus outta me.)
had it happen a few times...
happened to me once ... now i solder them before installation ... i read that in a GP article once - forget who's tech does that for them
improves the tone too

No kiddin'? Hmmm . . . I'll have to try that.
I think it was either Jeff Beck's tech or SRV's tech that did something like that. Also took wire insulation to protect the string as it makes the quot;breakoverquot; in the tremelo block of a Strat.
I think it's happened once to me as well.
What was really a trip was getting a bad bass string. I'm pretty goofy about always having fairly fresh strings, so I change them pretty often. One day, right before a recording gig I changed strings, and I could not intonate the string for anything. I took it to a friend's shop and for giggles the quot;madequot; a bridge out of nut blanks and it intonated quot;rightquot; about an inch or two forward of the farthest travel point of the bridge. I have changed strings hundreds of times on my guitars and basses, but I'd never encountered a bad string like that.
i had a D string break like that yesterday! the worst part for me is that i know i have some extra strings somewhere but i cant find them.
i also find string breakings, when playing gentle, rather frightening. Once even cut me a little. right on Mrs Palm. Such are the risks though.
i broke a string once, on my friends guitar. i bent the floyd rose down and it just snapped, it was weird as hell. its weird becuase i dont even hold back when i play, but yet ive never broken a string on any of my guitars.
I break them all the time. Not normally in that place, however, it's happened before. Usually just a weak point in the string.
Never at that exact point, but I've broken a few right at the end of the wrap.
The soldering thing sounds like a good idea ... I'll have to give that a try as soon as I get a new iron.
I think its a defective string. I wouldn't worry about it Artie. If it happens again then you need to investigate it further, but judging by the way that broke i'd say its a defective string.
i usually break mine on the part that goes across the bridge. but on my guitar with a kahler trem, i usually either break em at the ball end
I had a bad batch of Markleys one time where several strings from diff sets did that.
And boy I sure wish I was one of you folks who never breaks strings. I don' tbreak as many as I used to, but I still break quite a few. Though I have to say I'm starting to notice it from one or two specific brands of strings when ruling out all the other variables (sharp saddles, etc). Gibson makes some hella good strings..been playing them for a bit now (brite-wires), and they are the best I've used so far.
Weird string break, Artie. Never seen that before.
FWIW, I've broken maybe 1 string from playing. I had two strings break once in a frightening LP accident...

I wondered about that, because they're fairly new strings. Maybe two weeks old.
I've had wound strings pop right in the middle, weird.
I've always thought of it this way- If it breaks at the nut or bridge more than once I'll look into it but otherwise I put it down to an old or defective string
Ive had that break before.
I only break wound strings, and only at the bridge these days, but it happens on all my guitars, so i guess its just something that happens because of my heavy handed technique.

Sounds interesting. How much solder do you put on?
The weirdest string problem I've had is when they unwind from around the ball. You tune up, bend a note and it goes flat, you tune up again and so on, and then the string just slides out of the bridge anf the ball is on the floor! Happened to me a couple of times, only with EB funnily.
I have a phobia that I'm going to be bending over my guitar when a string breaks, and it will ping up and cut my eye (yes, I know that's really stupid sounding).
