Can I wire an SSL52-1b (bridge) and a SSL52-1 RwRp (middle) to humbuck together without too much frequency cancellation or honk? At first glance it looks like it is possible. Is that what the RwRp was designed for? Has anyone tried this? I searched the forum and could find anything on this.
It seems like it would work. Just wire them up in series and see what they do.
I assume you mean sitting right next to each other like two coils in a standard humbucker. If so, then a RWRP in series with a regular single coil would not only be fine, it would actually be the only way to do it without hum.
You could use two of the same wind and polarity but you would have to accept it as a humbucker with hum because you can reverse the leads on one of the coils but you obviously can't flip the magnets. On the bright side (so to speak), there wouldn't be any high-freq cancellation as with a normal humbucker, which you would have if you used the RWRP as the other coil.
Does anyone have experience with the ssl52-1? How is it with a5 on 3 strings and a2 on 3 strings?
No experience with the SSL5-2, but I have experience with half of the pickup (APS2) wired in series (all pickups in standard strat positions).
It sounds good, and thick, but it still has some of that frequency cancellation (quot;quackquot;) of the #2 and 4 position. The sound is inbetween the #2 and #4 positions and a hot humbucker.
If you're looking for a humbucker sound, it's a cheap option, but it won't quite get you there. I will say that if you roll the tone down a tad, and use a no-load volume pot set to 10, two APS single coils will roar (actually, I have APS in the middle and neck with a Twangbanger in the bridge).
The SSL5/2's are very fine and very underated pickups. The product description on the SD website is EXACTLY on the money: you get the Alnico 5 percussiveness on the bass strings and the smoothness of Alnico 2 on the treble.
And yes, if you use a RWRP middle pickup on a strat you will have hum cancelling in the quot;notchquot; positions.
