Not the star trek kind but the pedal!
Looking at picking up a phaser pedal some time soon, right now the boss one loosk very appealing, seeing as at this point im a boss type of guy. What do you guys mainly use it for? Just solos? or anything else?
I dig using it for chords, solos, cleans, dirty. I like the phase shifter better than the flanger because I don't like the big whooosh the way I used to, lol. I had an old Univox back in the 80's I got for fifteen bucks. Can't get them on ebay now for under 80 it seems. It was a big black box with the word Univox in red letters that would pulse with the speed of the phase. In a dark room, it was so cool on top of the amp. Talk about acid trips.
Solos, funk rhythm, chords.... I use it a lot, really nice for added color and I love that vintage swoosh. My favorite effect.
My second favorite effect. I love setting the speed kind of low, and playing suspended and add9 chords on a lush, clean setting. Oh wait, that's just Breathe.
My favorite is the Uni Vibe. Like a phaser but more random and vintage-cool.
Ultra slow on leads, medium on rhythm. Mmmm... that's nice.
I have a Boss phaser and really like it. I've found quite a few uses for it. I really like using it on a warm clean channel with a little reverb thrown in, layering the phaser and some chorus gives off a pretty nice sweeep too. I don't really use it alot with higher gain settings, but it sounds really nice with the guitars volume knob rolled back on a mid gain setting.
I have a few Phaser pedals... An 80's Boss Japan one.... and an old homemade Ampex kit pedal..... The old Ampex pedals where part kits put out by Boss for electronics fans to build themselfs at home. Mine sounds pretty good! It's a bit noisey but what the hell...
I use mine mostly for copying the sounds on some tunes that had Phaser on them. Zep's Achilles Last Stand, and Ten Years Gone.... Van Halens Atomic Punk.... Stones Shattered, Ozzy's Flying High and Can't Kill Rock And Roll...... I try not to keep a Phaser on my board as i play with it far to often... I'll keep a Boss Flanger but not the phaser...
Aside from delay the phaser is probably my favorite effect of all time. I really enjoy switching to the clean channel and arppegiating chords with the phaser on a subtle setting. I'm also a big fan of Mike Einziger (Incubus) type volume swells or crazy distorted single note lines like Adam Jones (of Tool...and yeah, he uses a flanger, but you know, the spirit is the same!)
My favorite phase of all time (and I've tried quite a few) is the Boss PH-2. It's got two settings: setting one is a classic phase tone and setting two is sort of a flange like tone.
Destroying Angel: how do you like the PH-3?
I use it in solos or clean rhythm work, or where a song just calls out for it.
Sounds great on the chunky rhythm of Flight of Icarus...In the past I've used it as a Leslie effect for Frampton stuff...now I have a leslie sim in the POD XTL, so I use that...
I love Phasers and Chorus..use them both..not much of a Flanger guy..never was...
I have an EVH MXR 90 which I love for the warmth and lushness compared to the Boss I had... but it doesn't have as much tinker factor as the BOSS..POD XTL version models the MXR and then adds in the extra adjustments of the BOSS...wayyyyy cool.

I've heard some people say they weren't too fond of it, but it does everything i need it too and sounds pretty good while doing it. It's definatly worth checking out.
Solos for a wah-ish vowel like sound.
Cleans for a creepy eerie sound.
I love the phasers on D1ck Wagner and Steve Hunter's guitars on Lou Reed's quot;Rock and Roll Animalquot;. Especially that funky rhythm guitar solo in quot;Rock and Rollquot;.
Johnny Winter had a great phaser-type effect on quot;Captured Livequot; too, but I'm not sure whether that's actually a phaser or a rotary speaker.
I have a Dunlop MXR Phase 90 that i love for playing those old Waylon Jennings tunes. Also great at a medium setting for rhythm work. Very tasty!!FenderBender
Is that a phaser on Live's quot;lightning crashesquot; intro, or the super Ween number quot;a tear for eddiequot; tasty whoosh...
What about Homebrew Psilocybe? It sounds appealing, although I haven't heard many other phaser pedals...
