I am now the somewhat proud owner of a Jay Turser P-Bass clone!

Yeah, I know ... cheap Chinese knock-off, but it is great for my needs. I bought it for two reasons:

1. I need something to do bass lines in my recordings, and I was tired of renting them (it's great to have one right there when I need it)

2. Playing bass is cool

It's actually a really nice bass, especially when you consider I only paid $180 CAN for it (got a really good deal through a friend who owns a small music store). It's a standard P shape with the single split coil pickup. The body is black with a badass tortoishell pickguard, and the neck has a vintage yellow tint with a rosewood board. Action and fretwork are excellent right out of the box - another big surprise for such a cheap instrument.

I haven't had a chance to play it plugged in yet, but the one I tried in the store sounded great. I bet with a couple of upgrades (pickup, nut, tuners) it would be a killer thump machine!

I'll post pics later if requested.

Wait until you start thinking quot;in bass.quot; When you listen to songs, you just key in on the bass lines- and then start thinking- quot;whoa- I never would have thought of doing that.quot;

Bought a Cort Action bass in January for just those reasons... then an old tube head I found with a bass input... and now I'm hungering for an Epi Thunderbird, which my bass skills by no means warrant. Bass introduced me to a whole new dimesion of GAS.

Fortunately for me, buying a bass did not turn me into a bass player. I know what you mean, though. Once you have an appreciation of the music properties of a given instrument, you begin to have a better ear for them when listening to music…

God help us if any of us decide to take up the drums.

I have a Yamaha bass on order at my local store for exactly the same reasons you listed... plus at my church we have plenty of guitar players to go around and few bass players.

My bass will cost $99 US. It has one split pickup and one full with a 3 way selector switch.

Still haven't decided about a practice amp. I don't need it for recording - and the sound guy at church prefers to have the bass plugged in direct with a dedicated 15quot; monitor... so I don't know

Looking forward to it

It's even crazier 'in drums'!

Yeah, I bet I'll be the same in a year or so. I'll probably want a Bass PodXT ... heck, I think I want one now.

i take you up on your offer of pic posting

I have been using a guitar POD XT for recording bass with very good results. (I can post a clip if you'd like) You ought to guy a guitar XT and then use it for bass also... I can't imagine paying $299 or whatever for a Bass XT. I don't think too many of us need 32 different bass amps.

A lot guys do use a DI for playing bass live. Works well I hear.

i need a bass v-amp (pod is too much $$$) or something, cause bass sounds pretty bad through the guitar v-amp. hell, i havent been able to get guitar cleans to not distort lately in the first place, not to mention trying to get a good bass sound. i used to get some really good sounds with the bass through it, but for some reason its a once in a blue moon kinda thing

I've gotten some decent bass sounds out of my V-Amp 2. There are only a couple of models that work well with it and you've got to skew the EQ pretty hard away from the guitar frequencies, but they're in there. Of course, you can also get a pretty good sound plugging directly into a mic preamp, which I also do. I'm looking forward to playing with some of the bass specific settings on the new Line6 TonePort. I just need to sell a bunch of stuff so I can buy it...

IcedEarth442: nope, wasn't me.

tfb1990: sure ... gimme a few minutes.

RGN: that's actually what I'm doing now. I use the tube preamp usually, and sometimes the Hiwatt if I want a less bassy tone. Both sound pretty good, but I'd really love a couple of bass amps modeled ... maybe an Ampeg SVT, and SWR, and a GK. It would be great if I could buy a bass amp model pack instead of a whole new piece of hardware. Maybe if we all e-mailed Line 6 and asked for it ...

This is the best I could do at night with a crappy camera.

try to find an older 30 watt Peavey Minx. It sounds great for bass and clean guitar. I got mine for $50.

Great stuff. I bought a bass recently and I am really enjoying playing it.

Agreed. Not all bassists are retards.. just most

I have a Patrick Eggle Milan IV. I don't know anything about it, and nobody I've asked seems to.. but it's a great feeling and sounding instrument. Some days I even play it more than my guitars
