Well i was thinking around.

SSL-7 Quaterpounder (Staggered) in the neck
and maybe a stag mag in the bridge.

But im really not sure, i want a guitar that does great cleans and vintage rock and roll.

just not an EMG sound .

Hey Mephis; You're talking about what has become one of my favorite pup combo's. That is, a Quarter Pound, paired with a 'bucker in the bridge. I happen to love the way it works with a C5, but a Stag Mag could be cool too.

If I could make one suggestion though, spend the couple extra sheckles to get the quot;tappedquot; version of the QP. Add a push/pull pot to quot;tapquot; it, and its like two pups in one.

Not only does it have two distinct characters, while tapped or full-on, but when you blend it with the bridge, its like two more. So, if you tap the QP, you get 5 distinct combinations out of two pups. Add another push/pull to split the humbucker, and you get an amazing array of great sounds out of just two pups.

Hmm, whats quot;Tappingquot; mean or do?

Ive never messed with single coils, i just thought the SSL-7 looks cool and the specs on it (balanced low and mid, low highs) would work good.

And for a bucker, i just want something thats not too extreme, but splits well sence a squire 51 comes setup to split the bridge bucker.

From what people are saying, the SL's might not be bad either.

That is a very cool guitar at a great price, and the one I checked out had a much better neck than most Squiers I've seen. Let us know how the new pups work out.

quot;Tappingquot; just means that there's an extra wire that comes out of the pup, that lets you use half the coil. In one position its around 7k, like a Standard Strat pup. In the other position, it doubles to 14k, and gives you a higher output, different type of tone. Its well worth the trouble to use it.

Especially if you combined that with quot;splittingquot; the 'bucker.

Artie:
I agree with you about tapped pickups but it seems like the local stores never stock them. Can you order them direct from SD, or do you have to order them through a dealer or distributor?
For a quick'n'dirty upgrade to a tele, put in a tapped bridge pickup and replace the 3 way switch with a 5 way strat switch, wired up with one tap as Position 1 and the other tap as Position 5.
Speaking of tapped pickups, with no special equipment you can add maybe 1000 turns of 42 or 43 ga wire from a spare pickup for a slightly hotter tap from one of your favorite pickups. Bring the wire out to a copper rivet and dip it in paraffin to keep everything tight. The added quot;oomphhh!quot; might come in handy...

I think I've seen somewhere on SD's site, where they specifically say they won't sell direct. But I've always gotten very fast service from both Lew and John. (LewsGuitars and Black Rose Customs)

As far as adding the extra turns, I'm not sure how well that would work. The QP is tapped at the halfway point, and I believe there's around 8000 turns on there. An extra 1000 might not make much of an audible difference. Still . . . might be an interesting experiment.

Edit; Now that I've heard the tapped pup, I want to try another. And, (folks will get tired of hearing me say this), it combines so well with the C5, that I'd like to try another when I can.
A Fender Cyclone with an SSL-6 tapped and a C5 would be killer. (Or Mephis's Squier 51.)

Btw, do all alnico magnet pickups have that weird kinda dabby (I think its what you call muddy) clean sound?

Because so far for milder sounds I really like ceramic more.

Maybe just an EMG thing, Btw i dont wana screw with rewinding a pickup or spending alot of money, i also wana keep it simple. Im prolly going to wire it myself so i dont wana go nuts with things that i could do later on, and at the end of the day its $150 guitar, not worth putting $300 of eletronics in.
As in milder, im talking a clapton kinda sound. not too gritty but really good sound.

And the wood, the finish, the fretwork, the build quality, the bridge, the tuners, and many other things.

Electronics do make up 50% of the price tho.

Just came up with an AWESOME idea!!! the black 51 with a chrome phat cat in the bridge and a quarter pounder in the neck! No idea what it might sound like, but it would look great .

That would make an interesting combo. And, btw - Both my Patriot and Genny have more money in electronics than the guitars cost. It was well worth it.

I wanna get one of these 51 teles and put a covered CC in the bridge and a Burns Tri-Sonic at the neck.

Haha, i just got tha guitar home, im hella impressed. Its even guy a skunktail! A skunktail on a $150 guitar... WTF.

Anyway, suprizingly the stock pickups dont suck. they will be changed, i just thought i should tell ya how funny that is.

the pots are crapy, they just kinda spin over easily, not dampened like a good pot should be but ohh well, im replacing them soon anyway.
This is going to be a hell of a fun project guitar, btw Maple fretboard FTW.

Did you get the butterscotch color one with the black pickguard?

Im an eric clapton fan, so no. I got white and black. Itll make the chrome Phat cat look better .

What would be hot is the black pickguard on the black guitar and the chrome covered pickups.

Well, The Qp is going to be black and the current single coil is white, so it'll break up all the white on the pickguard.

the Phat cat will breakup all the black on the body.

Resulting in perfect balance.

I just thought of something, i better ask whats a good match for the phat cat, because it only has a main volume controll, i dont wana overpower my phat cat. And i pretty much know squat about single coils.

I have a Roland cube 30, and the blackface modelling amp, mid gain, notch position switch on strat, using single coils via a compressor pedal is just pure joy....
D'you like your cube, Mephis?

Hell yea, I've tried alot of amps, but roland is the only one that does it for me.

Presence maxed, r-fire(rectifyer), Eq all on 5, gain 5.=Best metal possiable
Tweed same settings=awesome for everything else.
