Does anyone know if Ibanez actually produced, for the masses, the guitar that both guitar players of Racer X used? I believe I once read that Mr. Gilbert had some ideas for it loosley based of an old Epiphone Olympus (??) that he grew up playing. I know that they were hot pink when I saw pics of them playing them (maybe neon green too?) and looked somthing like a Gibson Explorer mixed with an Ibanez Ice Man. Anyways, I know if they do exist they'd cost more than I could ever afford but if someone could post some pics and/or give me an official name for them it would be very much appreciated.

All I know of is the PGM600JB, which is an Iceman, Gilbert style.

The epi style guitars were never produced, just prototypes that were built for Paul and Bruce. I got to play the pink one, really cool, had a mini hum in the neck that could be used as like a 25th fret.

Here's a link to some PGM's that were produced.

F holes in an iceman??????

^ Damn!!! Never produced huh? Well ain't that a kick in the nards... Anyone got any pics of the afore mentioned one above? That or know who is lucky enought to have one that I could steal?

MikeF knows which one it is. I think they were Epiphone Coronets that had a humbucker in the bridge, and a Deluxe type mini hum in the neck. He had an orange and pink one, and those were the days when Paul and Bruce plugged into Lee Jackson modded Marshall JMPs. I used to go to those early Racer X shows, when I was a teenager, seeing them at the Troubadour a few times. The most incredible guitar playing I've ever seen was when I'd show up early to watch their soundchecks in the afternoon.

Right around the time Racer X released Street Lethal, those Hollywood shows were the best shred concerts ever. Everyone was still enthused about shred guitar, because Yngwie had made a big impact. And also, Guitar Insitute of Tech is in Hollywood, so the audiences were packed with those students.

The first time I saw them was at a place called Jezebel's in Orange Co. Got there early with a buddy and we sat at a table right in front of the stage. Yup, everybody sat the whole show, weird. But we loved it as we were there to watch the playing. They were unreal. I remember thinking that this must have been what it was like to see VH real early in their career. They came out to the Jetson's theme played over the PA and then just flat tore it up. They were so hungry, I thought they were the best band ever! HA! All the cabs were painted day glo orange and pink. Saw them at the Troub a couple of times as well. Small world GJ, we were probably at the same show.
One of the coolest things about going to GIT was getting to watch Gilbert play for an hour every week.

There's a shot here of the original Epi. Mid page, labled Los Angeles 1987.

from : localhost/one's Ibanez made didn't have a pickguard but were very similar otherwise.

Too funny...check this out.

If it had dot inlays I'd want it.

Seems like Epi marketed these guitars with the batwing headstock under a few different names, but I believe GJ's right and Gilbert's first one was a coronet.

Actually, I guess I was mistaken. I was thinking of the pink guitar (sans the fringe) that is displayed in the photo album two posts up... Right above the Epihone Olympus. Anyone know what that one is? And if they made that one in mass production? Preferably in hot pink of course.

I saw this on the Web, listed as part of some guy's collection:
The Racer X site mentioned that Bruce Bouillet smashed the green one
during a live show.

As MikeF and Gearjoneser mentioned, these guys put on the BEST live
show---nonstop action, cool songs and INSANE chops! I saw them
at the Country Club in Reseda when their first album came out--a real
shame they never got the recognition they deserved!

EDIT: You're right--at first glance, to me that picture looked like a
regular Destroyer with his shirt covering the body, but from what
I dug up on the Web, it's an Ibanez Destroyer with the lower bout
of an Iceman. Unfortunately, from what I read, there were just
two made!

This is Bruce Bouillet's custom Ibanez Iceman/Destroyer; he sold it to
a private collector after he left Racer X. Paul supposedly still has the
pink version.

Note the Duncan mini humbucker in the neck position!

^ Its like a destroyer but its got a different cut on the lower horn if you look at the picture. Kinda like a destroyer mixed with an Ice Man. And basically I'd sell my soul to get that guitar in hot pink.... with a kahler of course
