Posts for a tune-o-matic bridge. A bridge was slightly off kilter and posts weren't seated all the way down to the body. I tapped them in a little with a hammer until they were almost flush. One side of them pushed in a little more than the other and in the light you can see where the finish is pushed in a little bit and buckled slightly. Will this cause the poly coat to crack eventually at that spot? I'm assuming it's not all that flexible. It's a fairly thick glossy coat.

The finish might chip quot;ever-so-slightlyquot; but the rest of the finish isnt going to crack. If you leave the post where it is, and dont mess with it too much, it might not even chip.

It may. What you can do is to put a touch of poly on a small stick and rub the edge of the holes with it.
This should allow for a small amount to squeeze into the finish and gap fill any hairline fractures that you can't see.
Unscrew the posts first and tape off all metal. After applying the clear let sit for about 1/2 hour then pull the tape off.The finish should be tacky enough to stay put.
Because of how you're applying it you don't have to worry about about doing any sanding or polishing.Just reassemble.

Off topic I know, but the stoptail on my SG does not screw in flush to the body on one side. I have the other side raised slightly to compensate. Can I tap that stoptail screw in a little with out damaging the nitro finish or cracking wood?

I would suggest using warm water and a airdryer to warm the area. Then lay a cloth over the area and put a piece of wood againt the post and tap the post into place.
