Hi guys,
I have aquired a cheapo Fender Strat as a backup for stage - the previous owner had removed the Jap. pups and added USA Fender ones in to it - I have removed the bridge pup and placed an SSL-3 in there - at first I noticed the 'between' setting with the neihbouring middle pup was ok. but the SSL-3 was weak (nasal and thin) so I reversed its wires and now it is sh$t hot as it should be. However the same between position (SSl-3 with the middle pup) is now out-of phase - the sound is really tinny - if I reverse the middle pup wires will my SSL-3 be then out-of phase again? - or the neck Pup?
this is a constant problem when mixing Fender and SD pickups, since they're wired differently.
I love the SSL-3, and someone around here will have a wiring solution for you.
I'm not sure I follow what you're saying. The SSL-3 was weak by itself before? But ok in the notch position? Then you flipped the wires on the SSL-3 and it became ok, but the notch was OOP?
If thats the case, then it probably means you just had a bad solder connection the first time. Flipping the wires on a pup will have no affect when used by itself. I have to guess that you just made the connection better.
Try flipping the wires back the way they were on the SSL-3 and see what happens. I know its a hassle, but you have an unusual problem.
Hi ArtieToo
I hear what you are saying but this was also the case on my 'real' Fender guitar (see similar posts about about 4 weeks ago) - the SSL-3 pickup alone (on notch 1 on the 5 way selector) was weak until I reversed its two wires - and then bingo! I got the full power - I have a feeling that the other pickups affect it even when it is played alone - and that is what is bugging me - I always have the feeling I must first get the wiring right with SSL-3 before moving on and dealing with its neihbours...
If thats the case then something funny is happening in the wiring. The 5th position(furthest from your neck) should only have the bridge pickup. It wouldn't matter how you wired it until you started using the 4th position. I'd recheck all the wiring. If you have a continuity setting on a multimeter I'd use that to check signal flow through the switch to the jack.
