Anyone into the guitarists from these bands (Robert Smith/Cure, Daniel Ash/Lamp;R/Bauhaus) or other punk/gothic slingers? I'm firmly from the Beano/Page classic rock school, but sometimes you need a different flavor, and I love the atmospherics these guys create with their guitars. Sometimes just playing a few notes with some effects can sound HUGE. Check out Daniel Ash, (especially if you are a fan or early Pink Floyd). I also love Dave Navarro's early stuff with Jane's Addiction and he always said that his biggest influences were Jimi, Page...and Daniel Ash.
Daniel Ash was doing quite a bit of solo stuff at our studio about 4 years ago and he was using his blackface Super Reverb for quite a bunch of stuff in his recent work.
This post definitely caught my attention! I started laughing my ass off when I realized only one person has replied. I agree completely. I LOVE daniel ash and robert smith. I'm not really saying anything new, original or particularly enlightening, but a hell of a lot of guitarists are ONLY into giant wankathons. NOTE: there is NOTHING wrong with that, i do it too. BUT, if that is all you can do, that sucks. I wish more guitarists would have respect for the concept of a song -- that they should sometimes try to serve the song; even if that means playing only a few notes. balance is important.
You should check out troy van leeuwen if youre into daniel ash, but grew up on page
Now we're talking! I've been on this forum for almost a year and it is the first time someones mention such heresy! Let's have more of it!!!!!

Honestly, I did not think that the post would get any replies b/c there is such an emphasis here on the classic rock guitar gods and shred. However guys like Smith and especially Ash are doing amazing things. I did see the interview with Troy Van Leeuwen on this web site where he talks about his affinity for Jimmy Page, as well as Daniel Ash. Those are Dave Navarro's two biggest influences as well, so it seems like Pagey may be responsible for not only all these hard rockers and metalheads, but the goths as well. Who would've figured? Here's the Van Leeuwen interview:

I've always liked Robert Smith. He's written some truly classic songs and is an inventive and original guitar player and singer. Has always done his own thing and I admire that. Genuine and funny guy. Bit messy with the lipstick though.
I like that stuff, but it's a little sparse sometimes. I'm partial to My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, etc.

What's your favorite My Bloody Valentine album? I just got into them recently. Can you give me a recomendation for a first Cocteau Twins CD?

Loveless for sure.
Head Over Heals for a good first Cocteau Twins album.
So obviously everyone here is into atmospherics... What kind of gear is everyone using to get your atmospheric sound?
I am TOTALLY into atmospheric playing. Sometimes I'll just crank up the reverb and the delay, hit a few notes, and let them ring. Nothing wrong with that at all. My current fantasy is to be the lone guitarist in a keyboard-dominated band.
Honestly, I am SO SICK of quot;classic rockquot; these days. Guitarists are supposed to love it because the guitar is the dominant instrument, but it all seems so clicheed and meat-headed most of the time. Maybe that's why only guitarists and baby boomers listen to it anymore.
I would love to check out more of this type of music. The Cure, Love and Rockets, etc. Even Coldplay has some excellent laid-back guitar playing.

I agree about clicheed and meatheaded. I think a lot of the older guys out there who grew up on it are a little bit jaded. I think there is just as much good music out there now as there ever was in the history of rock; however, i think it's a lot harder to find. the big music outlets are a lot worse nowadays than before, giving the illusion that music, in general sucks these days. no. i think it's the outlets. there's just as much good stuff -- it just gets 1/10th the attention that it would have had we been living in the 60s or 70s.
Does anyone here like Failure?
Loveless for sure. Although I really like Isn't Anything, Loveless is legendary.
As far as Cocteau Twins, I really wish they'd put out a 'greatest hits' or something, because I don't really have anything to recommend, all my favorite songs happen to be spread across their career. Although, my personal favorite album is Blue Bell Knoll, I think Heaven Or Las Vegas was their most commercially successful, so i think it's a little easier to get into.
You definitely have to start with quot;Lovelessquot; by My Bloody Valentine. Kevin Shields plays some of the most original rock guitar on that disc...ever!
Here's the rest of my short list:
- quot;Expressquot; and quot;Earth Sun amp; Moonquot; by Love amp; Rockets (I think Daniel Ash is the best of all these quot;post-modernquot; rock players)
- quot;Pornographyquot; and quot;Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Mequot; by the Cure
- quot;Lovequot; by the Cult
- quot;Psychocandyquot; by the Jesus and Mary Chain
- quot;Nothing's Shockingquot; by Jane's Addiction (IMHO, Dave Navarro is the crossroads between shred, Led Zep riffing, and this post-modern atmospheric vibe. It's a shame he's too busy selecting the new lead singer of INXS, b/c when I heard him back in '89 I thought he was the most original new player since EVH.)
Mr Bungle?
get faith, Disintergration, Bsides from the cure. Oh and Live in Orange.
Does anyone play this stuff? It's obviously very effects-heavy and I don't hear pentatonic runs all over the place (unless it's Dave Navarro on Nothing's Shocking). I'm thinking lots of minor chords...

I do.
Alternate tunings are where it's at.
I’m originally a speed metal guitar player who quite some years ago became absolutely enamored with Depeche Mode and regardless of my background and the fact that I still love all that stuff I was (and still am) into, Depeche Mode is my favorite band and I can tell that they always will be. No question. Their Violator album literally changed my life years ago.
And Martin Gore is seriously a song writing force to be reckoned with. He’s an amazing, underrated guitar player in this genre and what a lot of people don’t notice is that a lot of the synth sounds in many of Depeche Mode’s songs are actually Gore on guitar. I think he’s absolutely amazing just in the way he uses guitar as embellishment, or when it’s the main riff of the song. Songs Of Faith And Devotion; that whole album has a very live and ambient sound to it.
Now you guys have got me started! I, too, didn’t know that there were any of “you” out there into this stuff!
