Anybody played all three? I'd enjoy a comparison.
No, but great Q! I would add the Seth and 59 to that list and you would have all of your basic vintage HB's. Someone put a list like that up not too long ago....I might see if I can find it. It was a pretty good review of a lot of classic Duncans.
Hey Donkey I haven't played the 78 but maybe since you have you can make sense of what I'm going to say.Pearly Gates---The Hottest of the Duncan PAF style pups. It is an A2 mag pup that has more midrange than the other PAF style pups but less bass. It has mismatched coils which give it the quot;rudequot; character that you often read about. This pup has a frequency push in the Cut/Presence knob, frequencies. Lots of LPs, Semis, and strats have made this pup at home. It has a standard 4 conductor cable.
Alnico 2 Pro---This pup has approximately the same DC resistance as the 59 or Jazz but has an A2 mag. It's a modern take on the vintage A2 PAF pup. It is a very warm with great string to string balance. It has round bass, thick mids, and a smooth top end. It will warm up any guitar. I have this pup in my Heritage 150. It also has the Standard 4 conductor cable.
78---From what I've read and seen (Kaknight's old tone chart for it) It is a very punchy/almost percussive pup; with even response across the frequency spectrum. It generally comes with a 2 conductor cable unless otherwise specified.
Sorry I can't help you any more than that on the 78.

Luke,
What do they mean by quot;modern take on the vintage A2 PAFquot;?

It's actually my words not Duncan's. It is not a Seth, is what I mean in a nutshell. All of my review breakdown stuff is in my own words since I find most of Duncan's descriptions lacking, and some just downright vague. I try to word stuff as well as I can but as we all know it's hard to impossible to describe tones.
The A2P has balanced coils and vintage output like a seth, but not as much quack. To my ears it sounds like someone took a Seth and did some brain storming about how to take humbucker qualities and add humbucker qualities, this was the result. Don't get me wrong this Seth doesn't sound like a P90 or a strat but it is more single coil-ey/quacky. The result pup is a warmer, thicker, more even sounding pup, with a smoother top end and more bouncy low end.
Hope that helps man!
If you want to read a big breakdown on Duncan PAF style pups, the custom series and JB. Do a search for Stock Les Paul pups by Alouu.

I have played them all. Luke Dukes review on the APH and PG are on. Here is my take on the 78 or EVH whatever they are calling it. Its a very warm pickup. Its almost sounds just like the CC but with less output and compression. It has great harmonics also.
