I just bought an Ibanez RG 7621 used. This is my first 7 string an I'm really enjoying it. I had some questions for people who might know more about them.

The seller said the guitar had been strung with heavy gauge DRs. He didn't know which exact gauge. They maybe feel like 11s. I have no problem playing it. He recommended I switch to D'Addario 10s. He said the heavier gauge strings would eventually warp the neck if I did a lot of bends. Any truth to this? I don't want to damage the neck.

Ibanez RG guitars have maple necks, right? And since it isn't a lower model, I wouldn't ~think~ that warping should be an issue, especially with 11's. I play a 7 string epiphone with a maple neck, I use d'addario 52-12's with a 80 for the low A (rest of the guitar is in standard tuning). I've had the guitar for a number of years and there hasn't been any sign of warping (yet).

GHS makes a set of .010s for seven strings (add a .060 for the low E)... I find those too floppy, though ( I do use them sans high E for D/Dropped C on my 6es, however)

I personally feel that for B you´ll want an 11 set .060-.070, but that´s my fingers talking...

Either way, on any decent guitar string guage won´t cause warpage (within reason of course, no .035-.125 sets)... after all, that´s the whole reason we started putting steel rods in the necks just over a century ago

What I consider quot;within reasonquot; for a standard scale seven (only listing the high E and assuming relatively standard guaging)... This doesn´t mean it´s necessarily something I would play, though, what I would use is in parentheses
added high c: .006 - .011 sets (.009)
added Low b: .008 - .014 sets (.012)
Tuning down to a: .010 - .016 sets (.014)
Even lower: Personally wouldn´t even go to A without a baritone (27quot; or more), but even on my Bari I used .14s or heavier, I used to play 15-20-32-44-56-68-80 tuned to E just for kicks on mine (And Yes, that´s essentially a seven string short scale bass with the strings closer together)

And when I have cash, my Custom Order for a Jackson Seven string Baritone (29quot; scale) is finally going in.. if you guys that buy/rip/borrow/steal the CD when it´s finally out think THIS is a big tone and a cool sound, just wait for the next one... already got Ideas like crazy

Around where I live 7 string sets are hard to find. I get a normal 6 set, 0.10. Then go out and buy a single bass guit string. 0.65. Seems to work for me.

I didn't think it would cause a problem. I looked at the D'Addario set and the low B is .56. Seems aweful light. I don't know what tunings you guys use. Right now I like this (A D A D G B E). Seems like that .56 would be too thin for that. It does have a maple neck. I think it's probably right in between a Wizard II and Prestige for thickness.

I use the D'addario 10's for my 7's, and I dont have any problem with string tension, though I do tune to standard B.

I'd suggest using a good set of 6-string 10's and buying a few different individual strings to try out for your low A, maybe have the gauges between 56-70 or so, and see what ya like.

I have the action on my 7 pretty low (not insane like floyds can go) but it's pretty decent and my 11 ernie ball set has perfect tension, the low-b 58 is kinda floppy at quot;Aquot; but whatever I can deal lol. I like that set a lot besides the low b string.

I'm using a 64 in B on my H-207 and I'm pretty content with the overall tightness, I could go for some more but it's brutal enough at the moment. Anything less than that however drives me insane with all the floppiness. If I tuned any lower, even a half step I'd defenently bump er up to a 68 maybe even 70.

I tried tuning G D A D G B E and the low end string sounds like a wet fart. Works when dropped to A though. Also what pups do you guys like for 7 strings. This has the Air Norton neck / BLaze II in the bridge. They are alright, but I was thinking Jazz neck / Invader bridge?

I usually use D'Addario 10-56's for standard tuning.
