Hello all, After six months on a 15 watt solid state my parents have finally agreed to buy me a decent amp. My question is: what should should I get. I have no brand loyalties, And I will be playing hard rock to metal with a standard strat and a schecter A-1. All I really care about is that I want over 100 watts and DIRT CHEAP.
Dirt cheap as in 100 dollars? Dirt cheap as in 1,000 dollars? Give us more info
Over 100 watts is a must?? ehm, I think you're in over your head...
as for DIRT CHEAP...remember, you get what you pay for...give us a budget to work with...also, why 100 watts? Combo I assume?
You don't need 100 Watts unless you're in a band, seriously...it might sound like a good idea...but getting something too powerful is a bad idea.
I like my Randall RG75G2 a lot, it has some freaking badass distortion.

Oooh! A prairie gangsta.
Maybe his talking about 100watts of a ss amp.
100 Watts of a SS amp can still run pretty expensive.
But I'd reccomend the Roland Cube Series, I've heard nothing but good. Or if you want tube like tone, get a Peavey Classic 30 or 50, or a Fender Blues Jr. and put a Distortion pedal in front of it.
Either would last you. The Peavey Classic 30 or 50 would do fine even for a gig situation. It's all finding the right distortion pedal. Don't cheap on the distortion pedal either.
I'm not very knowledgable on Distortion pedals so I will let others chime in here. I recently tried a Boss DS-1 through my Mesa Rectifier and didn't like it, it made my amp sound a lot buzzier distortion wise, and noisier even when not playing, it's modded by someone but my friend didn't tell me who.
I would reccomend the Peavey Classics, it will last you a long time.
I'm gassing for a 15w amp. The Franklin.

Stevo's clips have had that effect on a few people this weekend.
As others have pointed out, 100 watts of valve power is going to blow Mom's patience and wallet to hell! Truely, virtually nobody needs that kind of power. Check out a nice Roland Cube 30. It will surprise you with it's power and tones. Clean all the way to face-melting distortion. Bigg bass too. Cheap too. Go and play a 100 watt marshall at the store, and turn it all up to 8 and see how the sales guys react to smoke on the water... ah how the snare drums rattle
They are right, the only time you will get your moneys worth is when there is no-one in the house (or in a 5km radius) and you get to put it up past 1.5
Maybe you do, but there are alot of people who don't know what they are getting into when they ask for 100w
Seriously no need for 100watts, Buy a 30-50w tube amp instead! (enough for gigs)
Search for a used 50w Marshall JCM800 combo...if possible get one with 2x12 speakers. They don't cost more than some of the 100watts brand new SS amps.
I can't say which of the releases of the 800 that is best though but, I'll leave that to someone else who chimes in
If you want a clean sound that doesn't break up then a 100 watt amp is what you need. I just played a show last week with a friends Bassman reissue, my clean sound distorted way to early, it sounded terrible! I DONquot;T play blues. My Carvin XV212 is clean and loud and I won't play with anything less then 100 watts.
Well, maybe I am in a band... actually I'm not, but the band that I'm trying to get into is like quot;well, you need a really big amp if you want to play in our bandquot;. As for my mom, well, lets just say that this is a woman that bought four three foot klipsich speakers. As for a prarie gangsta there is no such thing and you can just shut your F***ing hole (before I stuff it full of wheat).
Hahahha, take it easy cowboy

That's a lot of mouth for a 15 yo. You could just be the first prairie gangsta! I'd be proud of it.
Here's an idea for an amp. You can look up the description at voxamps.com but I just got the higher end version and it's a great amp. It's a tube driven modeler so it has marshall models, Vox, Fender, Mesa Boogie, Soldano etc... plus it has effets. Just make sure you change the tube. The stock tube is horrible.
I love mine and I did have the 50 watt version of this amp which sounded fine as well. You may want to check out the new Crate V series amps too. you can get a 30 watt class A all tube amp that is LOUD and sounds great. Without knowing how much you can spend though, the people on this forum are limited to suggestions.
Here are a few links. Hope this helps. I'd look some of this stuff up on ebay as well to see what they are going for used. Remember, I'm trying to look for low cost stuff around 100 watts or so.

Well, as far as budget goes, since it's christmas, and since I can probably get my parents to split the cost (that way neither of them thinks its all that expensive) I could probably run anywhere from 300-500$. As for that cowboy remark, we dont have cowboys in kansas but we do know how to give you people from Denmark a good old fashioned ass kickin'
