The Guitar Festival DVD. The multicolor strat Clapton Played. What are the pickups in it.

Also, strats out numbered other electrics it appeared 25:1. How did that happen at at guitar (strat) festival. BB, Gibbons and Robert Randollph were the only ones I saw not playing a strat.

Isn't Clapton using the Fender Noiseless pickups?

Strats are the most popular guitars on the planet...that's why you see so many.

Herbert Sumlin played an LP - did you see all the sigs on it?

David Hidalgo played a Firebird

Vince Gill played his tele, and as usual, his style is like a clinic in tele playing

but yeah, there are a helluva lot of strat players these days

I think Clapton's quot;CRASH stratsquot; probably have his usual electronics ... the noiseless pickups with the boost circuit

Lew and Curly are right (like always!!!)...the pickups in question are Vintage Noiseless, and the eletronics are just like the Signature Clapton model.

That's some tough sound he was getting from it. Fender noiseless, cool. Do they have vintage sound capabilities too? He sure didn't have what I think of as vintage tone. I liked it. Is that what a set of SSL-5's or 6's would sound like?

Is that what a set of SSL-5's or 6's would sound like?I just spent some time with several different sets of Noiseless strat pickups from several different pickup makers...quite a bit of Claptons tone right now is the onboard boost features...the vintage noiseless pickups sound OK, but not 100% vintage Strat.

I remember watching a song on there at one time and it got me tickled. I was thinking to myself quot;damn, everyone of those dudes onstage right now has their own signature stratquot;. I think it was Eric Clapton, Jimmy Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and one or two others I believe.

Here's a pic
If you like Claptons tone so much, maybe check out the new Digitech 'crossroads' stompbox. Just my 2 ct.

I don't even think drugs could make that guitar look good.

I like it. cool. Quite unique.
And That's without the drugs!
What's not to like about it?

I like it. Very cool. I didn't know Clapton actually used that boost circuit or whatever... that never has caught my interest. I'm a total traditionalist when it comes to strats. Does he use that boost circuit on Me and Mr. Johnson?

Yep, he sure does. A few of the songs, like quot; They're Red Hotquot; he uses a very old Gibson hollow body ( NO CLUE what it is) but when he uses his strats he always uses the circut to some extent. I own a Clapton Strat, and I must say it is a dream. It plays great and it is possible to achieve a variety of sweet tones from it. I can get pretty good vintage strat sounds to Les Paul type mids.

I'm with Jolly on this one . . . I think that Strat looks like something K-Mart would sell.

Are my observations correct, that the vintage strat players don't care for the tone or the look of this guitar?

It's kind of itonic/interesting that one of the mainstay benchmarks for vintage strat sound is now playing a non-vintage look with a non-vintage sound.

Is this an example of an artist continuing to define himself? Determined not to be limited by his tools? Or is this simply an example of being versatile with a verstile equipment? Is the strat the Leatherman multi-tool of guitars?

IMO, the two best tones Clapton ever had were the Bluesbreakers Beano album and Derek and the Dominoes. The Derek album had some of the sweetest tones ever. Just his brownie strat and a tweed champ! That tone made me want a strat!

No I don't like his Strat tone now. I saw him on a Saturday Night Live rerun and he played one of his models and a 335 ( and some sort of tweed amp). Did he ever have a tone on that 335! Trash the Strats Eric and use that 335!

That quot;K-Martquot; Strat sold at Christie's for $321,100

One really important thing about Clapton - it doesn't matter what guitar he plays, what color it is, what pickups it has, etc., you can always tell it's him playing. That's the mark of a great and distinctive player. Clapton will always sound like Clapton, regardless of the tone he's getting.
