I can pick up a 5150 combo locally at a pretty good price. I know it`s a high gain loud heavy(as in lbs.)of an amp. I just wanted to hear from people that own one or have owned one. I`m getting tired of using OD/Distortion pedals and I know with the 5150 it`s got more than enough gain. I`d mainly be using it for classic hard rock type licks and riffs.

IIRC, Inter made some great clips using a 5150 combo.
Not my taste, personally. Lots of bad luck with the 5150.

I love em! If you can get it for a good price, go for it!

If you do get it though, and your as much as a tone bastard as I am, you'd take it to a local tech and get the bias warmed up. Most tube amps have about 30-35 mA in the power section, and the stock 5150 has it set at about 15-20. It'll warm up the cleans, and make the whole amp more dynamic and responsive.

Never got a chance to play it, but my cousin had one and he loved it. He got in a bind financially and had to sell it. He said it's the biggest regret he has as far as gear he got rid of.

actually, the combo is biased closer to 40 mA. I bought tubes from bob at Eurotubes, and he told me he was sending me tubes at that bias, because the combo was biased higher than the head.

I prefer the head over the combo. The combo sounds to grainy to me. I was able to get much nicer tones out of the head, when I had it.
