I've been lurking as a guest for the last couple weeks and got so much great info decided to join in.
For 2 yrs. I've been playing a Epi LP Black Beauty (3 HB) with a Kent Armstrong Hot Rod Vintage in the bridge, a KA P90 in the middle, and a KA Vintage PAF in the neck. The guitar is wired to split both bamp;n pups to single coil, and alternate which coils sound (outer or inner).
While I've gotten some nice tones out of this setup, one thing has always bothered me...too much low end I can adjust it out with Eq OK, but finally decided to take the plunge and try some different pups.
After hours of reading your posts, i decided to try the Aph-1 in the neck. I think the Vintage at 8.9k was causing alot of the muddiness, and was shocked to hear what my neck pup COULD be sounding like. For the bridge, I hovered over the C,CC and C5 for quite awhile, but finally decided to try the PG. I'm hoping the extra bit of treble will counter the dark tone of the guitar.
Kinda new to the all this stuff, so any opinions from you guys would be great.

This is a nice combo. Gives u quite some disticnt sounds.

I put that combo in my LP Studio and they sound great! My Studio leans toward the dark side, too. The APH-1 neck is nice and round with good hollowness in the mids and chime on top. The PG bridge has great mids and biting highs. Both pickups have sufficient low end and a really nice feel to them. I don't like the combined tone quite as much as a 59 set, but it's still quite nice. All in all, this is a very satisfying combo for clean and dirty tones.

I'm thinking seriously about that 3-pup Epi LP. I get the impression that
this is a more bassy guitar than the real Gibsons so I was thinking of
using 59 or Jazz in the neck to make sure there is enough chime. More
comments on APH-1 versus 59 in this kind of guitar... and whether it
will make the bridge 'plinky' to get the matching pup.

(For what its worth, overall guitar plan is to replace the 3-pos toggle
with a 5 potision rotary to give the following tones...
neck neck SC middle SC (hum cancelling) neck and bridge middle SC and bridge SC (hum cancelling) bridge

push/pull pots to give SC tones on the neck and bridge.
push/pull pot to override the 5 pos switch with midle alone
one pot left over, coil-cut on the middle...

Middle pup will be JB, stag mag, C5, something more brash...

Actually got the PGb in now and trying it out. The clarity is amazing after the years of muddiness. I'm actually wondering how it would sound in middle HB position, where i currently have a Kent Armstrong HB-sized p90 i rarely use. That would open bridge up for a more versatile Custom.
Thoughts, anyone?

I don't see why not. Use the APHn for smooth leads and cleans, PG in the mid for sparkle, chime, and biting OD tones, and the Custom for balls out rock.
