A regular of mine had been telling me of his plans to take the Seymours out of his Washburn and transplant them to his Les Paul. Then he rang me to ask me if I could finish the job for him as he didn't have time to do it himself.

See what you mean, Can you buy replacement wire for seymours or do you have to sit there linking each wire up with a longer cord ?

Tell him he destroyed his pickups, but you might be able to give him $10 a piece for them.

No problem??? I think i would politely tell him to go away and do it himself and see if there's a problem...then again maybe i would'nt be polite

extending the leads shouldn't be a problem solder and wire can't handle, but still... wow. At least he didn't cut them off at the baseplate

First off, is thee a way to fix that? Like put i n anew wire or extend that one? If so tell him his pups are screwed and will never work again. Then pay him $10 for them and say you want the magnets to swap with one of your pups. Bring it home, fix it and voila!
of course it can be fixed..want to make sure you use the right gauge of wire (which is likely 22 guage) and like someone said, solder, shielding etc.. more work in the end then doing it right but not quot;wreckedquot; by any means.
Can't you just make the pickups wireless like a mic?

But seriously folks, I have put some pickups in guitars. When it comes to putting Duncans or another type in guitars, I always take it to a tech. If I'm spending that much on pickups I really like, I don't want to ruin them!
Let the customer pay for a rewiring of the pickups. 4 conductor wire can be had for like 2 Euros the Meter, and the rewiring is easy but about an hour of work for 2 pickups. If he doesnamp;#180;t want that, he can either have the wires extended for a bit less or new pickups for a bit more
Look at it this way: more work = more money = greater likelyhood of the customer learning his lesson
I don't see a major issue here. Charge him accordingly. PUP disassembly, installing new leads. Install PUPs in guitar Probably $100.00 or more. Next time he will consider letting you doi it from the beginning.
I agree w/ Bludave, but tell him what he did wrong so that he wont doit again (it breacks my heart when i know someone *ucked ep an SD). Then Give him the biggest bill he's ever seen!

Octave doctor, do you get alot of work fixing peoples Fockups??? I certainly know that is ALOT of the work I get in here!!!! LOL!!!!!!! It seems like some weeks thats the only kinds of jobs I get!!!!

charge to install pups after you screw it up $60
if some one attempts to fix it themselves and then i have to clean up their mess there is always an aggrivation charge
It's like the signs you sometimes see at mechanic's shops:
Labor: $40/hr.
If you watch: $60/hr.
If you help: $80/hr.
If you tried it first and screwed it up: $120/hr.
If you're not comfortable with doing the whole thing, why do you insist on doing PART of it?!?
