anybody here ever build one of these?
i have seen them and i want to build one but i haven't done it yet
I've been looking into building a amp kit. Ted is only 30 miles from me and I've thought about going there and checking his kits out. I heard very good things about his kits. The only neg I've heard is he uses a lot of Asian parts. Most people change the input jacks to switchcraft. Ted also has his own transformers that don't have the extra winding to supply a real recto tube. He uses his copper cap recto for all his builds. I've not heard anything bad about these. I've heard most people can not tell a difference. His prices are very good! I'm waiting for his November kit. I've also read where he is going to offer a AC15 clone. I've got to have one of them for the Tele
i've thought and thought about building 1... but i'm just not confident enough in my skills... messing with things that you plug into the wall scares me alittle
Wow, I'm suprised about the copper caps rectifier comment. That really shocks me. I will have to check that out. Bogus idea.
For a few dollars more, you can check out Mission Amps. Better parts, better support. I have two MIssion Kits I built. tweed deluxe, tweed pro
Oh, and I have a Tweed Deluxe 5E3 for sale for the cost of the parts and shipping only.

I have been on Bruce's site and I only see the Deluxe...is the Pro gonna be available any time soon, or am I missing something? Also...how in the world are the Weber kits so damn cheep? Have you ever built one?
Weber kits are said to be cheap, said by Ted weber in fact, that he buys a lot of his parts in bulk from overseas and same with his trannies. His support is supposed to be lackluster at best. Also, he makes his own speakers. They're not his top of the line stuff, but he doesn't have to pay a middle man on that.
If you go to his site, there's an entire section of his user forums dedicated to Q and A. It's his only version of support. Same type support you get from the 5E3 Tweed Forum.
With Bruce at Mission, you can call him up and he'll walk you through stuff to try if you're having problems.
His Pro kits (same kit for 2x10 Super, 3x10 Bandmaster and 1x15 Pro with just two resistor changes) are killer. Bruce tells me he is currently spending time building both his old 5E3 kit and his new 5E5A/5F4 kit so he can document the living heck out of it. There is not much documentation on the new kit.
I've not built a Weber kit and do not plan on doing so anytime soon. I'm happy with what I have. Actually, I've got too many amps. So the 5E3 is going.

If you need a lot of handholding, then you'll have to wait for documentation.
For me, there was really only one wiriing trick I learned from Bruce on the 5E3 and so when I built the 5F4, I did it again. It is just how on the tube heater wires, you twist them like every other amp you've ever seen, but instead of suspending them over the top of the tube sockets like a lot do, Bruce has you tuck them up against the chassis lip so that the twisted pair is literally laying up against the chassis on two of the wires sides. Just shields it a bit better that way.
Other than that, it was pretty standard stuff. I just looked at his multi-colored layout and wired it all up.
