My buddy wants my guitar stripped and primered before he paints it. Or, could I just primer over the old paint to save time? Would that effect tone?
Thanks,
William

if it's a poly finish you should be fine just sanding it down a bit and then prime it...since paint sticks to paint best. also if you strip it all the way you'll have to fill the grain again etc. since poly is thick, i'd sand it down quite a bit but not to the bare wood so that way when he sprays over it it wount be stupidly thick. but i'm also no luthier so lets see what others say...that's what i'd do though hehe.

lol alrighty. The paint is typical automotive stuff, which is going on again after prep.

If it's automotive you can try an automotive stripper,BUT:keep in mind that that stuff is just for spot touching. Most cars are blasted to strip them.
I would go with what XSSIVE said.Scuff,prime,paint,clear.

Either that or you can expose it to bagpipe music.I heard the cadets practicing a few weeks ago and it is was painful enough to bring a tear to a glass eye.

Thanks guys

If you can find a can, Citristrip antique stripper worked great for me. It's citrus based, so it's a little more gentle on the wood. Just spray it on, wait an hour, and scrub it off. I had to do it twice to remove all the paint, but there was very little sanding left. It's really messy, though, and you'd better make sure it's fairly warm where you are doing it. Luke Duke tried to use it outside last February and the cold kept it from making a dent in the paint.

I won't guarantee it will work on other types of paint, but it worked on the paint on my peavey. And it's only 3 or 4 dollars, so it's worth a shot (at least to me it was).

1 to the bagpipers in training.
