This came across my mind the other day..
what is the diference in process between:
a gloss finished neck (either poly or nitro, doesnt matter right now)
a satin finished neck
a bare wood neck
an oil finished neck
this brings me to:
the gloss neck is just, sprayed, buffed and polished as far as i understand (not going into detail)
a satin finished neck has a wood sealer applied to it right? just like a gloss one, just without the actuall gloss (yes?) now, what is the process of getting a satin finished neck? (just apply the sealer and then buff it it to the satin polish(excuse my lack of knowledge in this)
the bare wood is just polished wood, without the sealer and anything yes?
and the oil one is a bareneck, just polished with oil.
why i'd like to know is, why do so many cheap-er guitars have gloss and satin finishes, if (as far as i understand it) it would be cheaper just leaving a bare neck on itelaborate on this and educate me a bit.
thanks guys
An unfinished neck means you need to oil it yourself periodically. Maybe they figure the people playing these cheap guitars won't bother doing that and the neck will ruin faster. I dunno. Seems like it's already ruined on some of them.
