Hello mates. I could use some advice from you guys.

A while ago I bought a Epiphone Black Beauty (les paul with 3 humbuckers). Good guitar but with quot;not so greatquot; pups. I mean....they do the job........but that's it . I only have enough money to replace one, but I mainly use the bridge pup anyway so that's okay.

I'm playing a lot of Iron Maiden. So hardrock/80's rock/metal etc. But not death/doom/black etc.
So I was thinking of putting a duncan sh6 distortion in the bridge postition.
Now my question is....is this a good choice? And what are your experiences with this pup?

thanks in advance.

cheers!

I had a Distortion set in a Les Paul for quite awhile and it's definately a smokin set-up for hard rock and metal. Go for it.

Welcome to the Forum!!!
I agree with robert on this one, a distortion would suite your need perfectly. And if you get it and find out you don't like it then go for either a custom (sh5) or a jb(sh4).

welcome , rohan!!

Thanks very much my friends. I think you've got me convinced already

but this pup isn't muddy sounding is it?

i would have said JB or custom, you need quite a nice midrange emphasis for maiden tones..

would a screamin' demon be a good choice for the guitar guys? i think the tone is what rohan is looking for, but do the woods etc match?

welcome, man
tom

very cutting, grinding pup, BUT i would advise the JB (SH-4) for maiden and rock.
not that the DD is not versatile or anything, but it has a bit more of a modern sound..
and half of the albums in the 80's have been recorded with the JB.. that's pretty much a fact.
the JB in my axe, NAILS 100% the tone dave had on donnington (must be cos he used the SH4 too ) the '59 in the neck aint far back on his solo tone either.

so, if you go for one, i say the JB

no they didnt... bridge yes, in the neck they used dimarzio PAF's and dave used an X2N in the neck of his SG custom. adrians jackson is loaded with jackson pups, no doubt custom wound by abigail ybarra..

but you got the latter part right. the JB and super distortion share about 80% of the recorded rock/metal songs in the 80's hehe. either will suit you very good

Go with the SD SH-6 Distortion! If you want a little more old school vibe and tone but still has the cutting edge output of the SH-6 Distortion, then go for the SD SH-4 JB. You can't really go wrong with these pickups whichever choice you make. Good Luck and Welcome to the forum rohan Good to have you onboard

Hey Rohan. I'll go with SH-6 on this one too. But really, I just wanted to say hi and welcome.

Many thanks for the warm welcomes you guys Anyway, I forgot to mention that the black beauty has a mahogany/alder body instead of mahogany only body.

Does that matter a lot?

thanks

anyone?
cheers!

They are attempting to simulate a maple top with the alder so as to give more attack. However most guys will tell you to stick with the pups they've already suggested. The distortion was used on a few 80's but not near as many as the JB. I'd say you'll be happy with either pup.

Luke

Dave Murray uses Hot Rails.. I know it

For maiden style music... for Black Beauty. my choosing;

Gold cover SH-4 Bridge (JB)

Rohan,

Welcome.

Well thanks for your opinions guys. Grately appreciated. I also read a lot of other topics on this forum concerning this.

Anyway, I've decided to go with the distortion pup. Since the only difference between the jb and dd is the magnet. I have to wait 3 weeks before it arrives though. The local music didn't have any at the moment. But it'll be worth waiting for. I'm not going to put a cold cover on it though. I think it works best without it and I don't care much for looks lol

Well, thanks again and I will tell you guys what I think of it when the update is finished cheers!
