I thought this was interesting. The JB/59 combo has come up for discussion a couple times lately, including here. I was just reading on the SD frontpage that a Grammy was won for Best Metal Performance by Motorhead, with Phil Campbell using a JB and a 59.
I just don't really think of those pups as quot;metalquot;, although I can't see why not.

The JB is all metal as far as I'm concerned.

i play metal, with not a jb or 59 but
Jb jr and a lil 59
oh and a full shred.
i can vouch that all those pickups can do metal just fine, especially the full shred lt;3, i just plug that baby into my 5150 and all hell breaks loose.
About 1/3 of 80's metal was recorded using a JB. And tons of metallers today use it too.
I've got the JB/59 in my Schecter C1-Classic. Great for metal but it's also great for classic rock, blues etc. I've always found the JB to be one of the most versitle pups. I guess that's why it's so popular.
I've got a JB/59 in my custom Tele. I can cover any type of music with 1 guitar, I'm thinking of adding a push/pull pot so I can split the coils. Any one know where I can get Yamaha's push/push pots they used on their guitars,
Well I guess the JB/ 59 combois one of the most popular combos. And yes I do beleive they are very versitle. can be used for other feilds of music too JAZZ, Classic Rock, Blues. It does not matter if u use them as a combo or on thier own. I mean how many pickups do u find so versitile ? Of course I am sure there are pups whic are but haow many cld u find?
Metal's actually my main interest, and the JB does it surprisingly well. It does lack in the bottom end that I desire, but not by much. It's just a little too loose for my particular metal.
But the sweet uppermids are too supple to let a little bass imperfection get in the way of enjoying every nuance of my attack. Excellect pickup and also one of my favorite combinations (the JB/59). Very complimentary, not in the math sense...
Cool, and good info from everyone. I just happen to have a JB and a 59n sitting on a shelf. Originally Posted by saladinI've got a JB/59 in my custom Tele. I can cover any type of music with 1 guitar . . .
Thats interesting. I think I'm going to move my Qp's and C5 to my Strat, leaving my Tele-ish Genny ready for something else. The JB and 59 might go into it just fine. Its already got push/pull pots, so splitting both should be a snap.
This could work out great.

I can't say I'm a big fan of the '59/JB combination. I've used this combo for a while but I could never find a good balanced eq on my amp. '59 was either too bassy/muddy or the JB was to bright/middy. How do you guys feel about this?

That's the reason I prefer an alnico 2 neck humbucker or the Jazz neck with a JB: less bass = less mud.
I use the Seth Lover or Pearly Gates as my neck humbucker: less bass = less mud.
The metal guys seem to prefer the 59N over the Jazz N...but I've always suspected at least a few of those guys would prefer the Jazz N if it had a differant name!
Some rockers are scared off by the quot;Jazzquot; handle and won't even try it!

Has anyone tried the JB/59 combo in a PRS Custom 22??? I am curious if they would be a good replacement for the universally hated Dragon II pickups that come stock.

I've been deliberating for weeks whether to choose the JB/Lil 59 configaration.
I'm looking for versatility but worry that the Lil 59 in the neck won't be powerful enough for any shred orientated lead.
I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out the best combination!
The JB/Jazz combo works better than the 59/JB combo to my ears. There is such a smooth transition when switching from the Jazz neck, to the middle position, to the JB bridge.
With that said, i like the 59 neck better for single note stuff, it has a little more presence to it then the jazz.
I like the JB/Pearly Gates combo myself. The '59 can have a bit too much bass for the JB in the wrong guitar (to my ears). Having said that, I had a JB/59 combo for years and loved it.

Hi, newbie here. I have the '59/jb combo in a Hamer. Came that way, so I don't know if they are any different from the after market ones.
I get a great sound (well to me at least) dialing in the sound in the middle position. The 59 will then be full, but not muddy. The JB is a little bright, which I like for low string riffing, but I usually have to roll the tone back a bit for leads.
