Okay I know I've asked this before, but I want to be sure before I order a body from usa custom or warmoth. I have experience with floyds and know they are the only way to go for super smooth action and dive bombs and such, as well as staying in tune. I've never used a wilkinson though. How good are they? What kind of action do they have?
Also, during the construction process is it substantially more work to install a floyd instead of a wilkinson?
third question, the neck I was going to have built will be a 12 inch radius. Which neck radius works well with a floyd?
oh, and I almost forgot to add, the original floyd rose, do the fine tuners get in the way of your hand, palm muting or otherwise?
I'd like to hear the answer to this, too. I almost bought a body and neck from warmoth last December. I'm curious to find out how much work the Floyd is.
I have no experience with the Wilkinson, but I can tell you that most Floyd nuts have a ten inch radius, although I believe they are available with a 15quot; radius as well if you special order them. Check the original Floyd Rose web site, they have a list of what they have available. Assuming Warmoth does the routing, installing a Floyd is no different than installing any other trem. I've never had a problem with the fine tuners getting in the way, although it's a bit of a different feel compared to palm muting on a guitar with a TOM bridge.

installing floyd....no
setting up...yes...
I got a kramer w/ an OFR in the bridge, and it never goes out of tune, though its not a floating tremolo...
I also have a strat with a wilkinson in it. The wilkinson feels nice, and stays in tune very well when combined with locking tuners and a roller nut, or a graphtech nut. It cant dive bomb quite like the floyd can, but its an excellent tremolo in its own right.
The wilkinson has saddles that can be adjusted for height, so it'll work equally as well with any guitar with any fretboard radius. I think the floyd trem itself has about a 12quot; radius, though I could be wrong.
from : localhost/back in business as well. I don't have any first hand experience with their systems, but I've heard a lot good about them.
No problems with the fine tuners on a floyd here. Remember, when getting a floyd, that there's the option of recess/no recess as well.

Wilkinsons are great units, tonally and feel-wise pretty much halfway between a Floyd and a V-trem.
Action is 100% a product of your setup skills, on any bridge. if you can´t /don´t know hot to properly set up an axe, 3-4 mm (@ 12th fret, strings capoed @ first fret) is nothing unusual...nor is gt;1mm if you DO know what your doing.

No

Again, this is a product of your setup skills...there are shims availyble for Floyd saddles and the bottoms can also be ground to match the fretboard radius
Locking nuts are available in 10quot; and 14quot; radii, the 10quot; is what youll want for a Warmoth compound Radius neck. If you´re hell bent on the 12quot; radius, you may want to consider the option of a graphite nut / GT Trem-nut and Locking tuners, as Carvin used to do before they added Wilkinsons into their selection

Too many variables (most of them regarding your own body mechanics, recessed or non-recessed also matters here)....your best bet is to go to GC (or anywhere else they sell guitars) and actually play a guitar with a Floyd on it
Zerb, thanks, I was hoping you'd pop in since I know you own both and set those bad boys up. Setting up isn't an issue for me, I can do that well and my guitar teacher is a luthier also. It was just an issue of practicality. I think I may go with the wilkinson for that reason. I'm not a crazy trem user, but I like to have something there that will work well when it calls for it.
I'm either going to go with a 12 or 14 inch radius. Both I like. I don't like anything flatter or rounder although on a vintage style strat I can deal with 9.5-10. 12 I like because it seems to have the best compromise between chording ergnomics and bending/low action ability. My Carvin CT is going to have a 14 inch radius and I'll see how that goes before ordering.
Zerb pretty much hit the nail on the head. I will add one thing, though. I have found that the Wilkinson is not quite as responsive as a floyd, but definatly more responsive than a V-trem. Additionally, Wilkinson makes a 6 screw v-trem replacement bridge that mounts exactly like any other 6 screw v-trem, but has the tuning stability of a 2 pt Wilk (mainly because the wilk 6 screw still has the locking saddles). It's a great tremolo for those desiring a more stable v-trem (the look, feel, and tone are very close to fender v-trems with stamped saddles.) Wilks are great trems for the player looking for versatility.
