I know it allows extra pickup combinations, but how? Is it a glorified volume pot, or is it an on/off sort of thing? What are the advantages of it over an on/off switch for a pickup? Is it purely cosmetic? thanks!
Just a volume pot converted to no load. No load isn't absolutely necessary for a blender pot. You'll prob get a little bleed thru from the unselected pup if you use a standard pot used as a blender tho.
It gradually blends in the bridge or neck pup with whatever else is selected. A switch will bring the whole pup in at once. Just convert the bottom pot on a strat or pick up a pot.
Neat little deal and real easy to make. Here's the link:

as i understand it, it allows you to variably 'blend' the amount of signal that each of two pickups send to the combined output ... so you can have 25% bridge pup and 75% neck pup (instead of strict 50%-50% that a switch would give) or 33% neck pickup and 67% bridge pickup, etc ...

It blends the neck and bridge pups in parallel.
See Fralin's blender schematic

Let me just expand on this a bit. If you use the blend pot on the bridge, the neck will always be on at 100%. You then vary the bridge from 0 - 100%. So, as others have said, you quot;mixquot; it in, rather than quot;switchquot; it in.
Yes...the beauty of the Blender pot is that you can blend in the proportion of neck pickup blended into the full output of the bridge pickup and vice versa. Creates A LOT of very versatile rythym tones as well as soloing tones. Also nice for taking alittle bite off of the bridge single coil by adding just a little (or a lot) of the neck pickup to it. It does have to be a no load pot, BTW, because you will hear the second pickup bleeding through into the signal if it isn't. Lew
