With all of the high gain amps out there, wouldn't vintage output pickups suffice?

What if people like to use the older amps?

Why should they use vintage output pickups? Hot pickups have a tone of their own, in every amp.

I agree, I much prefer the tone of a low or mid output pickup, ESPECIALLY when running into a high gain amp. A hot pickup into a gainy amp just yields too compressed and buzzy of a tone IMO, where a lower output unit would sound absolutely HUGE.

Depends on the sound you want. A DD will have a much tighter low end as a Jazz or 59, as well.

Because I like the sound.

There are a couple advantages to using a hot pickup into a high-gain amp. One thing is that the low-end will be tighter. Another is you can turn down the gain on the amp and not have to use as much. I'd rather have a hotter signal coming from the guitar, then turn down the gain, than have a lower signal and add gain at the amp. It starts to sound too quot;dirtyquot; to me when you turn the amp gain up.

cos i like the bridge bucker to compress a bit. makes for a tighter and a more focused (cutting) tone. plus the JB sounds freakin HUGE through pretty much anything i played

in the neck i like lower output pups for that airy open articulate tone.

I don't consider the JB to be super-hot, though. To me, a pickup is quot;too hotquot; when you have a hard time pulling a decent clean tone out of it, if it distorts even then.

Hot Pickups tend to give you a fat distortion sound more easily...

I should have some good comments on this in a few days with my evil motha pup I made on UGD. I use a medium/low gain amp.

See, I've always thought the opposite. I feel that lower output pickups give you a fatter tone, where a hotter one would sound tighter and more compressed.

It's got a Custom slug coil, and a distortion screw coil. It also has the large ceramic mag. I went with the hybrid where I'd have 2 different wire gauges for more texture....hopefully. I meant to try to score an A2 mag from MJ after Cathy told me MJ was a pushover! Just in case the ceramic was too much. The actual measuremetns are 16.88K DC Resistance, and 46 gauss.

It's got a 4 conductor wire so I'll be able to use it split too. What's really crazy is that it has the wooden spacers like the PAF's. Not that it changes the tone, just makes it stranger!

The thing that always gets me is that a lot of people think that the emg 81/85/89 pup are super high output.
they are not at all, they are wound with a very low Impedence(ohms or resistance) and then are boosted with the preamp/battery
The EMG 81 is a very clean articulate pup but sounds hotter since it is boosted
by being active
it is my favorite pup for the bridge spot
most of the hot passives are too mushy for me with the exception of the JB,custom.
I hated the duncan distortion it had this boxy type quality
I know many players that use a low output pup then boost it with something or another witch is basically the EMG concept
EMG stands for electro- magnetic generator BTW

Because every preamp section needs a good ass-whoopin' from time to time.

A bit of high output (like the JB) helps to balace output with the neck...
