I've heard about them, but have no idea what the hell they are used for. There is probably a few people here that use them. So if you could, clue me in on there funtion.

Well it's used for EQ.
OK Sly don't be cute...
A parametric EQ has three parts. 1) a knob for boost/cut 2) a knob that sets the center frequency around which said boost or cut will control 3) a knob that sets the width of frequencies that are controled. The width is known as the quot;Qquot;. (Not John DeLance from Star Trek). The quot;Qquot; could be as small as say 1/10 of and octave and as large as many octaves. So you can think of the quot;Qquot; as the curve.
A semi-parametric EQ just leaves off the quot;Qquot; control....the curve is predefined and unchangable and usually fairly broad....like an octave. You can find these kinds of controls on channel strips of better mixing consoles.
That's the remedial explination...
