I was told by a friend that I won't be able to run this pickup in one coil only, true?

yep. think of the VR as a P Bass pickup wired in parallel . Each coil only reads three strings. If you were to split it, you'd lose half the pickup.

Actually, I think they quot;fixedquot; that in the new models. Both the Duckbuckers and VR's come 4-wire now. However, that would be true of an older, used model.

Edit: Ooops . . . let me restate that. They are 4-wire, which you can wire them series or parallel, but your friend is correct about not wanting to quot;splitquot; them. They only have pole-pieces on three strings of each coil, and in split mode, would sound weird.

I wonder if there is a difference between the series and parallel mode.
Once i thought i could mod a p-Bass pickup this way,
but then a guitar tech told me, there would be no difference.

But wait:
Hey: Does the 4-wire mean, that you can run the pickup out-of-phase?

Yeah - good question. The description mentions paralell has less gain. With a hot rail in the bridge, I'm wondering if I should ask for series...

I am getting a V-Rails and a Hotrails in a Godin TC Signature (Tele Style, ebony board, maple cap, limewood body, dual rail single coil size pickups, push-pull tone pot).

As I can't split the Vintage rains with the tone pot, I'm wondering if it could be wired to split the Hotrials, and switch the V-Rails from Series to Paralell, or in/out of phase - any ideas? I want to get maximum versatility and kewl sounds out of my guitar.

I think perhaps Fender might disagree with that guitar tech, as they introduced a parrallel/series switching option on the American series basses, both P and J, in the Fall of 2003.Originally Posted by Inge MalmsteinI wonder if there is a difference between the series and parallel mode.

Well, i got this idea in the end 90's when i started to play Bass for a while (i gave it up after a short time and lost my interest)
Then i tried this some time ago, and i think there was a difference.
