I want to record our bands rehearsals on something good quality. I took my tape player last night which has a line-in for recording and from direct out of the desk it actually sounded good on the tape, but a tape is a pain in the a$$ so i was wondering what sort of things are around these days for recording...like idealy some sort of small portable hard drive th ing which you can plug into the direct out from the desk and record real time onto digital format. Is there such a thing?

yeah fostex and tascam make some simple ones, i'm sure

the easiest, smallest and most convienient: the minidisc recorder.

1 for the minidisc recorder. I have one of the Sony Hi-MD ones, and you can get a heck of a lot of music on a 1GB minidisc. Many have mic inputs too, which gives you another option for recording. They come with software that allows you to upload from the minidisc to your PC and thence to CDs.

2 on the MD, I use to record my practices with it, no problems (until I broke it!)

3 on the MD

Oops almost forgot about this thread....thanks thats actually a really good idea!!!

Wonder if they've come down in price since mp3 players have come in.

Ya know, I still like tape a whole lot. What don't you like about it/why do you think it's such a pain? Just curious.

I actually like tapes a lot too, nice and easy, but if we could get it straight onto digital format it would be much easier to do things with it than going through the process of getting a tape onto your computer without losing sound quality...but i suppose a jam isnt really about high quality of sound. That and my tape recorder (while being an excellent unit and good quality of sound) is kinda big. But ill keep using it for the time being and see how it goes, we just started recording anyway. Just wanted to see what other options people have been using, im new to this bit of stuff

minidiscs make automatic track points so there is no rewinding/FF at all- also, it is digital, so if you erase it and start over, the quality doesnt drop. They don't get eatten like tapes, and are smaller, so they are easier to store. Also, the recorders are tiny, about a 3quot; square.

Yeah...thats all the main attraction.

They all seem pretty cheap now, ive just gotta find one that records and make sure i dont just buy a player!

i have my eye on a fostex mr 8 im just waiting tio find it somwhere for half price
