Hi,

I'm seriously thinking of getting one of these (in vintage blonde). Does anybody know how the quot;duncan designedquot; P90's differ (in sound/tone etc) to quot;properquot; P90's?

Could I upgrade the quot;designedquot; P90's to the quot;properquot; P90's (with no problems) - and would I really notice any difference?

I've also read that the vintage blonde version is lighter (in weight) than the black version? Does this hint at different woods being used for each version? How might the lighter weight affect the tone/sound of the guitar?

An afterthought perhaps - but would I be better getting a Fender Telecaster Custom deluxe (twin HB model) and swapping out the HB's for P90's? i.e. the end product guitar would be of an all-round better quality...???

Many thanks,Mike

welcome to the forum mike.

i can't answer your question because i haven't tried any 'duncan designed' p90s. a friendly piece of trivia, look closely at how the p90s are mounted on the squier. it has adjustable screws at the side of it like humbuckers (think baseplate with screw tabs ala humbuckers). duncan p90s are mounted direct to body via 2 screws through the pickup.

i am too, wondering if its possible to get duncan p90s and swap the baseplates and covers with the duncan designed. well, i won't know till i buy the squier and the duncan p90s. too big a risk don't you think?

Hey mike, welcome to the fount of knowledge and wisdom. I REALLY like the look of that guitar, although I'm not a fan of squire... some ppl have said duncan designed pup sound quite good, and I'm sure they would be 'standard' p90 size, so upgrading them wouldn't be a problem. The 2xhumbucker model is a good geetar too, but you would have to buy humbucker-sized p90s - Seymour Duna Phat Cats or Gibson P94s - if you were going to replace them. Definately worth getting a hold of one in a guitar shop if you can - and let me know how it sounds!

I have one of these (blond one) and they do play great! Evan Skopp here said they similar in sound to the regular lower output Duncan P-90 (P90-1 ?). The difference is that it's not made like an NOS P-90 style as far as components. I was gonna change mine, but it sounds really good like it is,so they are staying for now.

As far as black weighing more than Blond (actually it's more like banana pudding colored), they are the same wood so they should be the same weight. Poplar I believe.

As far as a Squire, I normally would have ignored them as well, but their quality has gotten way better. This $219 guitar sounds and plays as well as some costing 3x as much. The neck on this is really great. You can't beat it for the price.

they are made of agathis actually.

I believe you are right... agathis. I confuse that with another one of my other guitars all the time.

Hi all,

And thanks for very your helpful comments. I think I am most certainly gonna dive in and grab myself one of these axe's.

But before I do - and this is probably a really dumb question - but can any of you tell me...

Is the tone/sound produced by the tele custom II anything similar to that of a Jazzmaster?

I know the Jazzmaster doesn't have P90's - but they're single coils right(?), so I figure the tele custom II would sound more like the Jazzmaster than say a quot;normalquot; telecaster?

Thanks,Mike
