I am currently turning my Godin LG Signature into a metal guitar. here are the basics: mahogany body, maple top, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard and stoptail bridge, and i have narrowed down to two promising combo's:
-DD/Jazz
-Dimebucker/Full Shred
I will have the guitar tuned down one whole step, then dropped to C. I need a bridge bucker thats thick, tight and huge on palm mutes and a neck bucker thats clear, articulate and does not quot;twangquot;. Im really into Killswitch Engage, Children of Bodom, Soilwork and the like. its a very tough choice. if you have any comments feel free... tnx.
Through the recommendations of the guys on the forum, I'm set on getting a set of Distortions for my metal/shred guitar. Now I just gotta wait til I have some extra GAS money.
Im sorry if this offends any SD people, but EMG's are the only way to shread.
Get an 81/60 set and you'll be all set. Trust me on this one!
i think DD/Jazz is Daves mustains old setup. I agree with EMG tho.
DD/Jazz, out of that, most definitely.
assuming actives are for everyone of course?...I'm gonna have to say the DD/Jazz would be downright mean.

You wont care if they are active or not unless you have some crappy solid state amp.re-reading what he said, an 85/60 setup would be fine for him.
Don't get the Dimebucker. I used to have in in my LP (quite similar to your Godin, 'cept for the fretboard), and it was quite crap. Sounded weak no matter how I tweaked thr EQ
Out of what's listed, I'd go DD/Jazz....
I use a 60/81 and 60/85 setup...

i had one in my les paul and i didnt like it. sorry
by the way, i liked the EMG at first, until i played my friend's lp equipped with JB/59. i love how passives quot;hugquot; the strings... i believe that actives don't do that no matter how close you place it to the strings. also, the duncans sounded fatter and clearer than the EMG's. the JB had better harmonics than the 81. i then swapped my LP with that same duncan combo.
whats the diff between the DD and the Dimebucker anyway?
tnx for your input so far guys.
I'm going to agree with Destructone on this one.I have played on EMG actives
and thought they sounded great until I played on a JB/59 in a LP.Man they really ripped my face off!!!But it also depends on the kind of amp you are using. You could have killer pups but never know there potential because of the amp was crappy.
out of the 2, i will go dd/jazz. but my 1st choice would be custom/jazz.

actually, i played both my guitar and his in one of our gigs thru a mesa dual recto... he was kind enough to let me use his lp custom after that, i never looked back.

I have the SH-5 bridge, I don't like it. Its good for (bright) cleans, and for classic rock á la AC/DC, but not very satisfying for metal. I'm having it replaced with a DD next week
I've got a Custom in the bridge and a DD in the neck of my Agile LP. I chose those pups specifically to get good metal and hardcore sounds. And they do that amazingly well, but they also do all sorts of other stuff really well too. I thought I was buying a one-trick pony, but what I ended up with has become my main guitar.
One thing to note: while the DD won't twang in the neck, the Custom WILL twang a bit in the bridge. Only if you want it to, for the most part, but it's there.Originally Posted by Destructonewow that combo sounds promising... has anyone here actually tried that combo?

The Custom is PERFECT for metal. Tighter than a dolphins ******* in the lows, screams like all hell in the high end, crunch's and chunks like nobodies business! Great pickup for metal, hands down.
