Does anyone own one or has anyone tried one? What exactly do they do? I'm guessing they ad some bottom end to your setup, but I dont know.

I have one, and it does what it says. It adds bottom and fullness to the sound, while also adding a non-harsh sounding brilliance. It really sounds great. For some reason, this is the type of box that people tend to avoid using. The only reason I can think of is that depnding on your ensemble, it may make the overall sound not as good because it causes the guitar to take up much more frequency space. It's that old thing about sometimes a great solo'd guitar tone sounds terrible with a full band mix, and a thin, weak guitar tone sounds perfect wen mixed with other instruments. Anyway, I have one in my pedal board and it really sounds excellent. Once I turn it on, I tend not to want to turn it off.

Hey Mike, is it one of those things that you can't tell it's on until you turn it off?

Ankalar: you lie about your quote, although I wish to christ you were the real Tim Mahoney. Well, you are the real tim mahoney, but not the real Tim Mahoney. lol.

No, I wouldn't say that, it's more one of those things that only has an on/off switch in order to prove how much better it sounds when turned on. It does make a big, instant difference to the sound, in a good way. I can see how it'd be easy to go a little nuts and misuse it though. I think minimal settings, especially when playing with a full band, give best results. It really sounds great. I definitely recommend checking it out.

...and just for the record, I know Nick Hexum from my regular gig, and he is a super nice guy.

Would it work well in a quot;heavyquot; distortion or is it better for a cleaner quot;bluesyquot; distortion. I was actually thinking of getting one instead of the BBE sonic maximizer.

Yeh, I'm using a more 'metalquot; distortion sound not a slightly overdriven fender combo. Would it still be useful?

Well, I use a slightly overdriven Fender combo , so I can only speak about that, but I would assume that since it's sort of a fancy EQ enhancer it would work with pretty much any amps and effects. I have it in my loop, the last pedal before the return. To paraphrase Jebediah Springfield, it embiggens your sound.
