For some reason Rickenbackers 330 model has caught my attention. Played a Fireglo model the other day and it felt and played great. God, what a work of art! I did'nt plug it in because when I check out a new guitar I like to take it slow. You know, first things first. I know they're really not billed as a 'lead guitar' and that's okay because if I bought one it would be used primarily for more rhythm type of things. As far as the 330's output how does it compare to a Telecaster, for example? How about the pickups? I know they come with either the 'toaster' style or a newer style that's suppose to have a bit more kick to them. Any info worth knowing would be very helpful. Thanks.
Rickenbackers are AWESOME except limted versatility wise. Lead sounds well not conventional lead but anything by the Byrds or The Church is very rikenbackery. (Broken Chords, Splash chords and Arpegios are heaven on these guitars) mind u they have to be coupled with a good clean amp (VOX AC30 comes to mind but most clean, warm, bright tube amps are good) Output wise there are higher then classic single coils (in my opinion) and have a warmer tone
A lot of the rhytm stuff on Radiohead's OK Computer was done on Rickies. Have a wee listen to, eg. Paranoid Android, Lucky or Electioneering. The lead stuff, though, was on a Telecaster with Lace Sensor pups, for some comparison
Thanks for the input. Anyone else?
Although it's not the same thing- I was really scared off of the 660 by the tailpiece. I don't like the idea of the 'trapeze' or 'floating' style tailpieces. Chances are you're probably not as hamfisted as I am though!
Great guitars! I've owned 2 over the years and I have GAS for another. Great jazz tone on the neck pickup and you can get some cool medium distortion sounds out of it as well! The pickups are a little stronger then a standard Tele pickup.
I got my 330 new with a set of toaster pickups but changed out the bridge one for one of the new high gain ones. The toaster bridge pickup sounded much too weak for me. I also had the redundant 2nd volume pot for the neck changed to a master volume at the same time. I loved the sound and look of the guitar but I couldn't get used to that thickly glossed fingerboard and those small frets underneath. I didn't have much confidence in the bridge or tailpiece either. I eventually sold it and in retrospect, I honestly don't miss it.

My dad has a 330 (with high output stock p/ups) and a 360V64 6-string (with toaster p/ups) and I found the 360 had higher out put but maybe that was due to body/neck/strings etc
