Can anyone guide me on a coil split mod on a 2004 Hamer Stucio Custon w/SH-1 59's? These have ONE volume TWO tone and a 3 way toggle selector switch. Thanks.... Larry
I split them with volume pot (Push/pull) on both pups. If you fiddle much with your volume or like them separatly split, buy two p/p pot as tone pots. Spin a split on the the tone pots would work too, but is a little hard on stage situations - its more a bedroom player thing. BTW the 59 doesnt sound that good when split.
If those are the stock 59's then they are the single conductor, not 4 conductor leads. I wasn't aware of a way to split those.
What pickups would you recommend w/4 leads that are similar to the '59's and CAN be coil split?
Well, you can get a set of 59's with 4 conductor leads if you REALLY want to split the 59's. To me, most of the PAF type pickups aren't the greatest when split. They're too low output to begin with. The one I had the best luck with, tone-wise, was the Jazz. But, it pretty much sounded like the Jazz, just with a lot of hum. May I ask why you're wanting to split the coils on the 59's? Those guitars sound so good they way they're built, I can't imagine split coils helping out that much. But I can't stand true single coils either, so keep that in mind when reading my replies.
But in response to your question, both the Jazz and Pearly Gates can be split, and they're similar to the 59's output wise.
Yeah he's right you need pups with higher number of windings to get a decent sound. Please keep in mind that a strat has 6k (8000 windings) and a PAF has only 4k (5000 winding) on one coil. Lindy Fralin solved it this way: He wound a humbucker with uneven coils (say 5k/3k) to get a better split sound. That could be paired with a Custom/C5/CC on the bridge or another Fralin Unbucker (like a 5,5/3,5).
Thanks for all your help! You can tell I'm a newbie (even though I'm an old guy). I was trying to get that twangy single coil sound of a Strat because I cannot afford to have a bunch of guitars.

Hi junior (member), this is the long term research for all tone-seekers - a guitar with fender and gibson sound in one. Sigh!
