analog gt; digital ?

digital gt; analog ?pros and cons of each ?

analog - because i can just about figure out how to build them myself and how the circuits work etc

Analog... digital just sounds wierd to me

I usually perfer analog, especially in delay pedals. Analog is known for having a warmer sound were as digital can sometimes be sterile. But it all depends on the sound you want.

Well they can both sound good or bad, it is all how you make them work.
I am still on the hunt for that guy who made a Maxon AD-99 digital, and no one could hear a thing

who cares how they are made- the sound is what is important. I have heard digital and analog pedals that suck. And ones that are great. Use your ears, not blanket statements.

In general, I prefer analog to digital. IMO, the biggest downside to digital is latency. A/D/A conversion takes time (as does the processing) so there's a slight lag between the input signal and the output signal, sometimes when the effect is engaged, some FX always do the A/D/A thing.

The one area where I defintely prefer digital is in delays. DD sounds cleaner to me and longer delays are possible without going ridiculously expensive.

yeah, i don't mind digital, but i'd rather have a simply made analog pedal that's easy to tweak, and with fewer delicate parts.

amen - i own a few of each type. i love digital delays, and having a hi-cut control (danecho) lets you get close enough to the analog sound. of course, having the option of 2 second delays without hitting £500 is something of a plus, too

for distortion and other 'tone shaping' effects, its gotta be analog. you cant really drive an tube amp with any success with a digital pedal IMO..

tom

As long as it sounds good I really dont care if it is analog or digital. The only digital I got a the moment is a DD-5 delay, and it is doing its job.

That's like asking whether paint and canvas is better than Adobe Photoshop. They are just tools that are good in different ways. In either case, the person holding the brush/mouse decides the quality of what comes out.

Er there is a world in difference from an oil painting to Adobe
Just go and take a look on some of those classic pictures, not the replicas, see the real stuff, it is quite astonishing.
It is two different worlds.
But between analog and digital, well not the full processortype stuff but the hybrids and normal analouge stuff the difference can be next to not there.

No, you missed my point. I'm not saying they are the same! You must think I'm pretty dumb

What I said was analog is not better/worse than digital: they are just different tools. It is equally possible to create nice art from either, and it has more to do with your skill than anything else. That is why I used the paint/Photoshop analogy.

Haha no no it is me who is sorry, I did not read your post proper, I am quite tired right now
Lolol
I get it allright

No big deal ... have a good rest!

I like both for different reasons.

I like digital delays for their versitility and clarity, but I am on the hunt for a good analog delay for slapback.

I hate spring reverb, so digital is nearly a must.

I don't think I'd buy a digital wah or OD/distortion pedal though....

And the tracking on the digital Boss OD-3 (octave) is much tighter and less glitchy than the analog OD-2.....though I am on the lookout for an OD-2 anyway.
