So i tried one of those variax acoustics and it sucks. It really let me down because from quite a few reviews that i read its supposed to be a bad ass guitar BULL****. the guitar played like plastic many of the models sounded the same, who knows a banjo sounded the same as a banjo and most all acoustics sounded like a P.O.S. jumbo acoustic. just thought i should warn any of yall if u wana to buy it before playin it.
i liked it...
What were you playing it through? I would think you'd want more of a PA setup for that guitar than even an acoustic amplifier...
i played one with no amp, just acousticly and the playability i thought was nice. kept sliding off my body though, and it was heavey...
Not sure what the problem you had was... I have one I use in the studio and it's pretty convincing. You'd never know the difference. Matter of fact I just cut guitar tracks for the Boston tune More Than A Feeling for a new UK dance remix of it (Ugh! I can't believe I'm actually even saying this), using the 12 string folk model. Double tracked it sounds so dead on to the original record it was hard to believe. I just ran the XLR from the power pedal right to the mic pre, adjusted the comrpession and mix sim distance to about the middle and tracked it!

Puck, what can I say.... I am a whore... But the guitars do sound killer! The re-tracked electrics and faux acoustic sounds pretty close to the original. That's my saving grace! I'm hoping for some gold for my wall... The last remix these guys did last year went Top 5 in the UK. And what's really sad is that as much as you want to hate it, it's impossible to not to tap your foot to it. Bastids!

Great song, but a dance remix???? WTF?
HAHAHAHA....hey, if it makes someone happy, I'm cool with that amp; wish ya' luck!!!!
I've never seen the Variax, but it sure looks like a pretty cool tool, especially in a home studio setting. Nothing really replicates the real thing (carefully staying away from the quot;Great Modelling vs Tube Debatequot;), but who can afford that many toys????
Chris... we just did the guitars for them. They did the groove and will do the final remix. I do have my standards!
Puck... I know al ot of big names are using the Acoustic Variax live. Rod Stewart's guitarist, Maroon 5, John Fogarty as starters. It's saves the wear on the road of vintage gear and there is no mic-ing headaches at all. It's all direct! You can adjust the compression and the distance simulation of how close the mix is to the sound hole. Alt tunings, and the ability to switch acoustics instantly.
The whole Variax thing is kinda' cool. I wouldn't dump all my stuff for one amp; it's my opinion that new, they're a little overpriced......but as opposed to dragging a bunch of vintage gear out with you, yeah I can see that!!!!
One of these days I'll check one out. The mandolin, banjo, amp; sitar sound interesting!!!
The bass player in my new band has a Variax acoustic and we're learning a few songs where he plays the acoustic and the keyboard player plays bass. It sounds awesome to me. Very full acoustic tone. The 12-string model also sounds great. It can do banjos and sitars too, haven't really explored that but it sounds like fun.
Anyway, the Variax acoustic I've heard sounds really great, no hint of suckiness.
