What's your favorite Keith Richards stuff?

Lately, I've been really diggin Midnight Rambler.

Is he your basic Tele and Fender Black Face player?

More of a Tweed guy in the studio and he sounded great during the Ampeg amp years (Ya Ya's to Exile, IIRC). I'm sure he's used every amp and guitar under the sun.

I think he was best with a P90 guitar, although I love the tones he got on his solo albums too.

Not much love for Keith Richards around here?

Surely he is one of classic rocks greats, legends.

Are there any Keith Richards wannabes left?

Brown Sugar, Happy, and Little Red Rooster. The man can do a lot with 5 strings and 2 chords. I like Keith and I think The Stones are still a great band after 40 odd years. Open G, 5 string, vintage Tele's through old Fenders and Boogies.

What you talkin; 'bout Willis?!
Open G? That's tuning the tele to play the G chord in the open position, right?
5 string?

5 string?Keith tunes to G alot...low to high, D/A/D/F#/A/D BUT he takes the low string off (the low D string)...he has done this for years...try it, you'll find Stones riff's by the boat load!

Love his tone on that one! Big Keef fan from way back here.

Yes sir. He tunes open G with no low string. try this link.... from : localhost/you don't tune like this it is difficult to make most Stones songs sound right.........Joe

Thanks bungalowbill and Christian, I'll give it a go.

Jumping Jack Flash it's a gas gas gas. Ya!

Midnight Rambler: Tele with a Fender Deluxe Reverb? or Sunn Amp?

Midnight Rambler: Tele with a Fender Deluxe Reverb? or Sunn Amp?I never saw Kieth with a Sunn, but Im hardly the man to ask about the Stones or about their gear...Tele's, Strats, LP's, L5S's, 345's, etc BIG Fender amps (BF/SF) and lots of Ampegs live, some older Boogie stuff, Tweeds in the studio

Christian-

How would you go for the Midnight Rambler vibe if you wanted that sound?

How close would you get with your JV?

I know what you're saying. But, as an example the Georgia Satellites guys plays a Tele on Keep Your hands to Yourself, right? I can get pretty dog'gone close with my JV and the Hellhound. But, that's just one tune. And it ain't Keith Richards and the Stone either. Wow, did this turn into a goofy post or what! yuck.

Or The hot wound 7.4K Tex Mex in the bridge of my JV must be a really sweet pickup.

I'm one of three people out there that actually dug his solo stuff...

But I do have to admit that Gimme Shelter, Happy and Highwire and great tunes.

That's the thing about the Stones man....there's so much good stuff out there! Even when it's bad it's still alot better than alot of other picks.

Keith also did use ( maybe still does) Tony Zemaitis custom guitars, crazy metal topped Les Paul shaped axes. P-90's and humbuckers I think.

Can You Hear Me Knockin.....or whatever it's called

Yep....This is classic quot;Keefquot; rhythm at it's best....Off the quot;Sticky Fingersquot; album...Mick Taylors leads at the end of the song are great also...

The song is quot;Can't You Hear Me Knockinquot;

Keith used Ampeg amps in the studio and Dan Armstrong,335s,and maybe a Tele during that period?

Did keith do 'beast of burden' ? That's my favorite Stones song . . .

Stones are a band i have a love hate thing with... They have some great tunes that love ALOT and a lot that i hate... That being said i really like Keith. His Ampeg tone was so cool around the 69-73 periods.... I have an old boot lp of a German 73 concert where Keith sang Happy.... very good live version and the sound is amazing!

When it comes to the Stones i love
Monkey Man- Amazing tune!!!!!
Too Many Cooks
Can't You Hear Me Knockin
*****
Happy
Get Off My Cloud
Shattered-(i have a neat live version of this somewhere where Keith's guitar feedsback at the high end of his Phase 90's sweep)
Under Cover Of The Night-(not bad... neat groove)
Gimme Shelter

And there is some more....

Great rythym guitarists... I had a really hard time for some reason playing a Stones tune in a band i was in a few years ago.... For whatever the reason my brain and my hands would not work to copy keiths playing right....

I think the Ya Ya's version was Ampeg amps...very loud and fat. IIRC, the Keith part on Rambler would be standard tuning capoed at the 7th fret (or whatever gives you the root, I can't remember). I think back then it was more Gibsons and the Dan Armstrong, with the occasional Tele.
