HELP! I have searched all over the web and I still can’t find the simple answer to a simple question. I want to remove the clear gloss finish on the back of my Charvel neck. What kind of sandpaper (grit) do I need to use and would Linseed or Tung oil be better to use on the neck after it’s been sanded. I’m only going to oil the neck; I won’t be putting a new finish on it.

Cheers,

CJ

You won't need any oil if you simply de-gloss the neck. Use the black wet and dry 320, 400 and 600 grit sandpaper, or find and superfine steel wool to degloss it.

That's what I would do if it's one of the cheaper Charvels as the neck will still retain the protection of the finish.

I have an Ernie Ball Axis that has no finish other than a light coat of oil. The neck feels amazing, but it needs frequent adjustment of the truss rod as it's affected very easily by temperature and humidity changes. Because of that, I wouldn't strip a neck to the bare wood where it's difficult to perform neck adjustments

Cool, thank you VERY much! I already have #0000 steel wool, would that work to de-gloss it?

Cheers,

CJ

I personally would not go with the grits suggested. You could easily go through the laquer down to the wood if you were just wanting to de-gloss it. 0000 will almost polish the laquer. I would use something like 1000 grit paper or higher. Maybe 0 or 00 steel wool. The coarse steel wool might be the way to go because it will dull the neck but, probally wont have enough power to sand through it.

the last one i deglossed i used 000 steel wool and it worked great

1500 grit sandpaper.

I agree with the steel wool. I've used the 0000 and it gave a dull look to poly. Not sure if your neck is poly or lacquer...but the steel wool will dull it. I used a 0000 3M Scotchbrite pad (white) after to give it a smoother soft gloss, feels nicer too.
Some of the grits mentioned would easily strip the finish off. I use 1200, 1500 and 2000 grit daily in my touch up biz...for your neck, I'd use the steel wool anyday to achieve what you want...those grits will work, but I'm suggesting what I feel is the best and easiest. The wool will comform to your neck, the sandpaper is stiff (you don't wanna wet it for this) and sandpaper loads up easy...gets sticky and gummy...the wool won't. Good luck.

Charvel model series = Poly finish = grade 0-00 steel wool to simply degloss

Otherwise strip finish as normal starting w/80 gritworking up to 2000 then steel wool
