I have a guitar made out of basswood. It has a 24quot; rosewood/maple neck and a vintage tremelo. I'm looking to get new pickups for it, but am unsure as to what I should get. For the bridge, I want something that can do distortion pretty well, but also do nice cleans. For the neck, I'm looking for something with rockin' distortion. If it has a nice clean, that's great, but if not, no big deal. I know basswood is supposed to be a bit bassier in sound compared to alder, so I dont' know if that means I should look into pickups that concentrate on the mid and high frequencies. Any words of advice form you guys would be greatly appretiated.
Yes, humbuckers.
You're right about it being slightly bassy sounding wood. I have a basswood (tilia) Gamp;L Legacy Deluxe with a maple veneer, and it does require a slightly bright pickup that's real tight sounding. I have a C-5 in there, which is clear and punchy, but I'm not sure I've nailed the tone with it yet. I'm thinking that a 59, Custom or Screamin Demon might be a good choice. The C-5 sounds pretty nice in it, but the C-5 has a lot of bass, so I'm thinking of going one step brighter.
Bump
Distortion Neck, Dimebucker, Custom or Distortion bridge
Would a Custom, Distortion, or Dimebucker sound good clean in the bridge?
'59s compliment basswood well
it's not well known for havin good high end, but 59's are, but still have a fat bottom
I'd go for a dual '59 set actually
A JB might work well in the bridge of that guitar... or a set of PGs? What kind of distorted tones are you looking for exactly?
