close

i love the single coil sound in the neck of my strat but the middle position single gets me close enough to that sound that i think the added thickness of the humbucker would be cool. anyone know what SC sized hum is closest sounding to the jazz (neck of course)? id also like it if i could split the coils and get a decent single sound out of the pickup. im not expecting it to sound like a real sc but id like to get as close as possible. should i wait till the new sc sized humbuckers comes out from sd?

I think the Lil´59 is about as close as it will get to a Jazz...... But I haven´t had a Jazz in years, so I may not be the best reference...

i dont think you can split the single coil sized humbuckers. thats just what ive heard, so im not 100% sure.

IMHO, none of them really are gonna sound that close to the jazz, so you might wanna look at all the possibilities and pick what you think is the best. look at the tone chart, and listen to the clips.

you can split the hot rails and the cool rails too i think

wouldnt a cool rail sound like a jazz?

I would say the coolrails.
The Jazz is a bright Humbucker and has a bit of a single-coil.
That's the same how i would describe the coolrails, even if they don't sound the same, i'd say they go in the same quot;directionquot;.
On the other hand, i would describe the coolrails also as the one which has a bit of the Stag Mag.
So If you know the Stag Mag and the Jazz i'd say the coolrails is something between both pickups.
And you can split it, but it's too weak, because it has a smaller magnet field, which makes it sound thinner than a single-coil.

depends - most of the humbuckers ( mini and full size) you buy now are 4 conductor. the only difference between 4 and 2 conductor is that the (end first coil) and (start second coil) wires are already joined inside the pup, so you can't split..

I'd have to go with the Lil 59 as well... Of course, I have mine in the bridge, so I may not be the best giver of advice in this particular matter... I can't give up the neck SC sound of the strat with tone rolled way back! And the Neck/mid combo... So, I put a lil 59 in the bridge and did the Spin-a-Split mod... SO I can use full on HB in bridge with knob at 10, SC in bridge with knob at 0, and flick the switch to combine the bridge/mid pups like 2SC's, since the HB is split!

Very versatile pup!!! I wish I would have gotten it first, instead of the Hotrails!

all of the s.c. sized h.b.s (including the stacks) have 4 conductor cable, except for the vintage rails and duckbuckers.

. . . and the Vintage Rails has been added, so only the Duck is left.

thanks for all the replies. i think im just going to leave my strat as it is and make a designated humbucker guitar with one of the few bodies i have laying around. keep the suggestions coming tho....im interested in knowing all i can about the best SC size humbuckers etc.

I'm surprised that everyone is saying that a Lil59 sounds like a Jazz. My Lil59 sounds like my big 59, and I doubt that a big 59 sounds like a Jazz.

Then again . . . I've never heard a Jazz.

I'm using an HS-2 and a Jazz in the neck positions of two Strats; not that they really sound the same, but they do share certain harmonic characteristics-- and you can split the HS-2 for a nice quot;Stratquot; sound.
