OK then folks.... This is my jump into the deep-end of the pool of infinite evil. In other words, my trip to the dark side: DIMARZIO.......
Out of the Dimarzio neck humbuckers, which, in your opinion, are the best?
I'd like to try out various different models. I already have a PAF pro (which I still have to try! ) but what else is cool?
The Evolution? Air Norton?
The Air Norton is one of my favorite neck pickups of all time. The PAF Pro is good too, but I find it is more likely to suffer from the typical quot;too-bassyquot; neck pickup syndrome. The Air Norton cuts very well, and has a nice round tone. What guitar will they be going in?
I can tell you which two were thier best sellers in 2004:
Paf Pro amp; Air Norton
The Paf Pro outsells the Air Norton according to the Dimarzio info I have.
Never tried either one!
Guess what thier best selling bridge bucker is:
Super Distortion followed by the Tone Zone.
HS-2 and HS-3. After that, I go the Duncan route for bridge pickups.
I have a Dimarzio Air Classic in the neck position of my Epiphone Les Paul. It really cleared up the sound as the stock Epiphone pickup was a lot more muddy. I really like this pickup. Haven't tried any other Dimarzio neck pickups extensively so I won't comment on them.
I have to say the Air Norton and the Breed neck are my favorite DiMarzio neck pups all the time.
Some of my faves for neck, Super II, Air Norton, Steve Morse Neck, Fred, PAF Pro (really depends on the guitar and application there ... the Fred in the neck works well with a Norton {Non-Air} in the bridge; the PAF Pro can work better with either a hotter or lower output pup (than a Norton in the bridge), Multi-Bucker (yeah, I know it's kinda a *different* pup, but still). They all work well with a hotter bridge pup, sometimes the classic combo of having a brighter neck pup works well, and sometimes having a darker neck pup works well (as in the Morse Neck).I still like the PAF also, but I do find it a bit lack lustre at times (although well balanced), it worked well with an Air Zone in the bridge of a 25.5quot; Hard Tail Alder/Maple/Maple. And the Breed (as a set) worked well in an Ash/Maple/Rosewood (Hard Tail), but not as well in a 24.5quot; Poplar/Maple/Rosewood.
The only DiMarzio I like for the neck is the Virtual PAF. All the rest sound either synthetic or just plain muddy/burpy.
I had the Paf Classic in the neck of two guitars and sounded great, specially in the Guild S-100. It's a good pickup but it couldn't beat the 59n I am ussing right now. Now it's in the bridge of my home made with the 59 on the neck. Amazing combo....
Satriani's Paf Joe can be more open-sounding and versatile than the Paf Pro imo especially on non-floating trem guitars. The Breed for neck can be a little choosy as it could sound muddy on a 24.75quot; scale, 22-fret, mahogany based guitar. The Air Norton is best suited if you are looking for a creamy smooth sound on the neck position.

good, finaly sombody can help me with this.
I was looking at virtual paf and air classic. could you describe the difference?
thanks
I use Tone Zone (Bridge) and Humbucker From Hell (Neck) and it's so far my favorite combo. I can get great cleans and shredding sounds wonderful.
I like the drop sonic model for the neck position and the X2N model for the bridge. This is the best Dimarzio combination for a basswood guitar or a mahohgany guitar.
Air Norton.
Now let me read this thread real quick.
Paf Pro and Air Norton for neck rock. For the bridge I like the tone zone, steves's special, and Fred
Ok can any one tell me which dimarzio comes closest to the THE JB?
anyone
the paf pro is a really nice neck pickup, i havent tried the AN though, but if it's anything like the neck pup in the JP MM guitar then i wont like it.
but now my fave neck pup is the 59
