Hey guys. I have recently purchased a Dean Evo XM as a beater/throw around/college guitar. But now I have grown to like it a lot.
I have already dropped a dimebucker in the bridge, and it sounds great. But the sound still suffers somewhat. (I know, its a hundred dollar guitar, I shouldnt expect much) It might be the stock p.o.s. strings. But considering the guitar was $100, im sure the pots and switches aren't great. Ive replaced other pots and switches in other guitars, and didnt hear a noticable difference, but the original electronics weren't crap either.
So besides for reliability, would I benefit tonally from changing the electronics on my guitar? Thanks in advance.
I think dropping some new hardware into it would be better a better upgrade, but definitely more exspensive.
If the pots are of the correct value, and aren't giving you problems, changing them out for the same values won't make any difference in tone. Same as for a switch, either it works or it doesn't. However, if you change the pot values or the capacitor values, you will notice a tone difference. If you still have the old strings on there, putting fresh one's on will make a world of difference tonewise.
Change strings before electronics...
changing them wont really make a tone difference, but better made components will be less likely to crap out
Alright guys, thanks for the responses. I was definitely going to put on a new set of strings before considering changing the electronics.
