Generally... How well does a metal covered humbucking pickup stop hum and noise over a non covered pickup?

I think Lew should be able to help you on this one Chris because I always leave the covers on unless it's going in a strat? I've yet to listen to the same pickups with and without covers because of the added work involved with the covers..
For me it's covers but purely for cosmetic reasons and not tone.
That's what it's for (among other things)...but seems like it works OK without them, even in gainy rigs. Biggest difference is in the tone...the cover acts as a capacitance and cuts some highs.

oh.... Thats cool...
anyone know how hard is it to add covers? Do you have to pot them after you solder the cover on?

You first place a peice of masking tape on top of the slug bobbin coil...Press the cover firmly onto the bobbins, clamp it,and resolder it...
I've also replaced a cover and have potted the pickup with the cover on....I just did it this way for that Jazz/59 that gave me buzzy noise problems last week...It's great now and I played through it last night at high volume levels..No noise and very very little microphonic problems!
