My brother wants to start playing Ukulele so I said I would help him start looking for one. I figured here would be a good place to start. So what is a good one? Looking for somthing that is all solid wood and sounds good. He doesn't want to spend a bunch... around $400.

Thanks,
edm

ovation has a nice okulele for 180.- EUR

Check out Elderly Instruments website for a good selection.

i was recently down in Maui and went to a little shop called Mele Ukelele....i think they have a website, and their own brand of Mele Ukes were really nice.the ones made with KOA wood ....really cool people too.... i found that even the $125 ukes sounded more like a toy than instrument......once you got up past $250, the ukes sounded really good, there was a big difference in my opinion

I own a Mele. I bought in Kauaii at a shop called Scotty's for exactly $400 and it's a sweet, sweet little axe. They had a bunch of Meles. This one wasn't as pretty as the flamed koa ones, but it had the tone. It's solid koa top, back and sides with an ebony fingerboard. Assembled partly in Hawaii (Maui) with some sub-assemblies done in Phillipines. It's a really nice uke and Meles are priced way better than Kamakas (Jake Shimabakuro's brand).

I have another uke that was made by my partner in D-TAR, Rick Turner. He has a company called Compass Rose Ukuleles and the quality is top notch -- though they are priced a tad over your $400 target. Mine is California walnut with a composite fingerboard. Rick even installed a D-TAR Timberline pickup and preamp in mine.

Cool, eh?
