Looking for opinions. Which STANDARD PRODUCTION Seymour Bucker nails the early VH tone?

I'm gonna throw my vote for the CC for standard production models

(of course I'd pick the '78 EVH if I could go custom shop...)

If you got the amp, most PAF'ish pickup would do it.
Use some extern eq to push the amp, if it is a plexistyle one, that will give you that old biting sound, make sure to have some good speakers

I can get pretty close with the Custom Custom in my bright sounding super strat. It's a bit too hot, but nothing else I've tried gets that close.

I get that sound through my Seth Lover, although as Rid said, I'm using an amp setup close to his to start with as far as tone.

I feel the same way about the output, if you get a chance you should try the EVH

1!

A2 59B/Custom Hybrid or the stock CC...

Thanks guys. Of all the pups I've tried, the Custom Custom was never one. Looks like I'll give that a good look.

You never tried a CC?!

It's closer to later EVH and a little less like the first few albums but it is a great pickup for an overall VH vibe!

Short of that I would say to do the magnet mod on a 59...either way, you'll thank me!

I will say the APH1's get that tone, not enough people say it.

I actually was thinking that being that its an A2 magnet and lower output. Good suggestion.

I am getting a Pearly Gate for that kind of tone now
I will see what guitar it will fit the best.

I have found the 59 to be the best for early vh tone (1st 2 albums). A CC for anything from WACF. I would use the 59 and tweek your amp for other eras of VH tone.

Personally, I think that any nice PAF style pickup will do that tone if you have the right technique, guitar, amp and speakers. If everything else in that equation is right, the pickup is going to get you very close as long as you're in PAF territory, and any differences won't be large at all. I've heard guys get very convincing early VH tones out of JBs, '59s, PGs, CCs, and lots of other stuff. The guitar, amp and speakers are a much bigger part of the equation that results in VH type tones.

I was a bit dissapointed with the A2 59B pickup....The Hybrid is pretty much what EVH went with, hence the Hybrid pickup from the get go....After that,I Liked the CC and the PGB was really good also..I prefer A2 in the bridge for it's warmth, sweetness, and rounder tones though..

Whats the difference between a Custom and a CC-(assuming it means a Custom Custom)
