A person I know is trying to get rid of an Epi Les Paul Deluxe for really cheap and I thought it would be a cool project guitar for P-90's. So I was wondering if it was possible to switch the mini-hums in the LP in question to P-90's? If this is possible is it any different than a standard pickup swap?

If the guitar has P-90 shaped routing (and the minis use the P-90 style mounting ring like on a Gibson LP deluxe) then yes.....

But if the minis use the squarish Epiphone mini HB mounting ring then no. The underlying routing wouldn't be right for a P-90.......or maybe not exactly no, but it wouldn't be pretty.

Post a picture if you can.

If it's standard Mini-Humbuckers, pull out the Mini drop in the P-90. You'll need to have something to shim the pickup. (it'll be too low without something raising 1/4quot; or so.
Shimmed P-90 in my 71 Deluxe.

That's what I was thinking.

It was my understanding that the Mini-hum route is different in size than a P-90 route...but it seems to have worked for The Golden Boy.

Good luck......probably can't go wrong if the price is right

I assume that's what it is. I didn't check to see if that was the actual model name or anything. It's just a mini-humbucker version of what looks like an Epi LP Standard.

If it was mine, I'd drop in a set of SM-3 mini-HBs and see how that goes before jumping to P90s.

I guess I'm not really familiar with the sound of mini-hums. I've always dug the smoothness of P-90's and thought this could be a cool project guitar. How do the SM-3 mini-hums sound when compared to normal hums or P-90's?

Hmmm...never seen one or heard of it though I'm not terribly quot;upquot; on Epis....I'd be interested in grabbing one maybe if I could find one.

The SM-3 mini is supposed to be fuller and smoother sounding that a vintage Firebird mini (e.g., the SM-1 set), with a hotter bridge pickup. I only have an SM-3 neck pickup, which is in an ash/maple Tele. It is a very pleasing and useful blend of single coil and HB tone -- nice HB fullness and compression, but SC-like clarity, hollowness and high end. I like it at least as much as a P90, and the humbucking never hurts.

And when he is thinking about letting it go for around $250 Canadian ($213.40 USD) I thought it could suffice for a little project axe.

There's an Epi Les Paul Deluxe one on E-bay right now.

This one is showing the 'quot;squarishquot; epi mounting ring. The underling routing is probably not wide enough for a P-90 or if it is, the opening would be very rough and would not be rounded like the P-90. Plus the screw holes when you remove the mini humbucking mounting ring would show.

Golden Boy's picture shows a guitar with the P-90 routing. The mounting rings for the mini HBs used with these types of guitars are shaped like the P-90s. I've only seen these on the Gibson Les Paul Deluxes.

So you need to know which version of the pickup mounting you would be getting.

1 on trying the SM-3s first.

I too noticed that Epi LP Deluxe on eBay and compared it to some pics of the Gibson version and noticed the difference in pup rings. From what most are saying and what I remember of the guitar it looks like P-90's won't work in this particular guitar.

Perhaps I'll consider the mini-hums or look at getting a budget P-90 guitar and trick it out with some SD's.

The Gibbo LP deluxe pics I've seen all have two mounting screws, and looking at pics of the underside of mini HB pups, those screws look like machine screws rather than wood screws.

In your Gibson LP deluxe, how do the mini-HB's attach to the body? Is it friction between the bezel and the wood?
