Wow.

That could be just what a Van Halen fan who likes DiMarzios has been waiting for.

I've often thought about making a hybrid from my stock Axis pickup and a Virtual PAF, although I wasn't sure if it was possible.

This isn't the same thing at all, but it's interesting nonetheless, especially if it's half the price of the EVH pickup, which it very clearly is trying to compete with. (overwound PAF with softer magnetic field).

Yes, it's also mentioned in their 2005 catalague which you can download at their site. Probably they have a sample there, too.

Dimarzio has a fair amount of PAF-type pickups to choose from:

PAF
PAF Classic
PAF Pro
Virtual PAF
Air Classic

and now this new one.....I might be interested in the new one....I have a PAF Pro...it sounds good but not quite what I'm looking for....it's not quite rude enough.

all the more reason for Duncan to make the '78 a production pup

It's going to be warmer/less bright than a PAF Pro, due to it being an Airbucker. Or so I would think....

Hmmm...that doesn't sound very EVH'ish to me then....EVH has a very trebly sound in his early stuff.

I think the trebly sound on Van Halen 1 was added at the board, as if you listen to live recordings from that period it doesnt sound half as 'trebly' or bright

seems to be compromise between virtual paf bridge and air norton

I wonder what the tonal differance will be between the Virtual Hot and the Virual model? I tried the Virtual PAF in the bridge position of my Les Paul. Had a great, clear clean sound to it. Very even response. The only thing I did'nt like about it was whenever I used OD or distortion certain notes had more of a single coil quality to them than a humbucker quality. Mainly around the D and G strings. I did'nt totally hate it, but I found that my Les Paul did'nt sound much like a Les Paul anymore. But then for some reason I've been thinking of giving it another chance lately. We'll see.

You're thinking of that garbage treble that Templeman added to Ed's sound after it was recorded. I can't even listen to Eruption without immediately reaching for my car's EQ button, or changing the station.....I hate (and Ed hates) the tone that badly.

Van Halen II (and following iterations) is how *Eddie* wants his guitar to sound. If you think those two albums sound alike.....well........

The very *definition* of Eddie's tone after that VHI ablum is quot;warm-yet-tightquot;.

Maybe that's why I really liked VH II over VH I.

Probably.........

The tone on VHI is a great quot;stunt guitarquot; tone, but not good for much else, per my use.
