I have a Custom / Custom in my Hamer Monaco Elite in the bridge position. Which one of the aforementioned PUP's should I mate with it? I play Classic Rock and Blues.......
Alnico 2, definitely. I found the PG too bright. I just slapped an APH in a guitar, 100% better.
A2pro. The PGn is cool, but it's kinda a weird beast. The mid hump is much lower than the A2pro (in the Seth range), meaning it doesn't cut as well in the mix, at least when switching from a CC bridge to the neck. Yet, it has more upper mid sizzle than the A2pro.
So, if you want to be heard when switching from the bridge to the neck, go for an A2pro, which gives that wonder Slash solo sound.
Alnico II pro!!! I like the Pearly Gates neck but, I really do not like the PG bridge. The Alnico II pros are great pickups!
hi...i'm new (obviously) but i just put in a PG neck and i love it. i've been rebuilding my first guitar a cort les paul copy. i know that i should have just gone out and bought a paul or an epi...but i've installed vintage grover tuners, and the PG in the neck position. My next mod will be the bridge PU. i love warren haynes and the hard southern rock sound...also slash...ect. the PG neck PU is such a nice addition. anyway...there's my 2 cents.
peace
I plan to have a CC/APH Les Paul style guitar to complement my Custom/59 paul. Heck, maybe I'll just put the APH back in it and put the A2 mag I already have in the Custom... hmm...
CC/APH should be a killer combo for creamy, sweet LP sounds.
I love them all and have the PGn in one of my Strats. But I use the Seth Lover with my CC...they're in a Hamer Monoco Super Pro.

Either of those 2 would be a fine choice as would the Seth. I will say this...THE PEARLY GATES IS NOT ALL THAT BRIGHT!!! It does have a upper mid peak that the Seth/Antiquity/A2pro do not have but it is not quot;too brightquot; in fact the PG set of my Favorite PAF style pickup set.
If you do a search on the forum you will find lots of reviews on all of the pups mentioned in this thread.
Good luck

You nailed me to a tee!
As much as I love talking about the quot;tonequot; of pups, I have to be careful, because my quot;at homequot; studio sound is so different then those who really play.

It's just that onstage, it's so differant than playing at home. At home alot of players tend to use a really warm bass heavy tune to fill out thier sound...especially when they're playing alone. Onstage, I find that a brighter tone with less bass is usually better. That way I cut through better and my tone is not stepping all over the bass player.

Not only that, but most guitar amps don't have midrange and tweeters. Its something I forget about when I'm talking about pups. But it's just so much fun to talk about pups.
I just gotta watch myself.

I thought mids were the key to cutting through, not treble...
I'm certainly no Lew, but I've played a few gigs in my day. I still have problems cutting through even though I really don't play out much anymore.

I think I'm the one who needs to watch himself...

I'm not sure what you're apologizing about. Your comments are dead-on relevant. I'm the bedroom wanker.
Don't ever stop buddy . . . it's why I'm here.

I'd say less bass and more mids...and a bit more treble than I'd use at home work best for me for cutting through onstage. Seems to me that alot of times players get comfortable using alot of bass at home and then get onstage and thier tone sounds like they've got a blanket over thier speakers. Use less bass and more mids...and a little more treble than you'd use when you're practicing at home. And put some energy into it! Rock n Roll and Blues are all about attitude. Lew
Every venue is different but as a rule you do need more treble on a gig. You can have pretty good bass too, just don't beef it up below about 200 Hz and you and the bass player will get along fine.
I'd say it depends on the wood and scale length. I love PGn's and PGb's in the neck. But in a bright strat sclae guitar it might be a little too bright especially if the tone control is not used to compensate (I don't know why people don't do that). A2p is a great pickup too, so is seths and ant necks. But I'd say A2P is the thickest among them (except a PGb in the neck) and that's why I think it should not be forgotten.
