I made one of my customs(TB-5) into a custom 8 last night(alnico 8)
and man the result was nothing short of AMAZING!
this pup has a way better tone and response than the custom 5!
it is a KEEPER!
it is even better than the ceramic custom!
it is not as quot;stiffquot; as the TB-5 ceramic

What did the mag run you and where did you get it?

In what way is it better than the Custom and C5? Can you describe the tone and compare it to those two pups?

Sure!
the alnico 8 made some very interesting changes to the tone of the stock custom
it became more PAFish,has a more singing lead tone( a lot like the JB) and better overtones and harmonics, the pup is also not as quot;stiff soundingquot; now!
the output only dropped a touch and i mean a touch(barely noticable)
the alnico 8 is less boomy and has more buttery mids than the custom 5 version
it has more growl than the ceramic version as well
to me it is the ideal custom, in that it still has a lot of the ceramic customs character, but also gained some of the custom 5's character and beleive it or not has some CC like things going on too!
my custom tb-5 is a 14.5K FWIW

strat it really is sweet there but also sounded killer in my all mahogany LP 57 reissue

dude it will kill, it likes bright or dark guitars.
the ONLY prob is that the alnico 8's are a ***** to get.

I was just concerned by your comment on the similarity to the JB on lead tones...which in a quot;normalquot; Les Paul I find overbearing. More of a quot;screamingquot; than a quot;singingquot; quality to my ears w/ the JB.

no i meant it SINGS not screams
it is hard to describe but it has a deeper lead tone than a JB but has that real singing quality
my bud heard it and said i quot;am dumping my JB for one of thesequot;
it blows away the JB trust me!

really it makes the Custom 5 wish it were never created and is slight better sounding than my revered ceramic custom which i loved to death, but i am always interested in checking out something else, thats is why i cant keep just one gilrfriend! LOL!!!!
i always hear guys say that the C5 is too holllow or has a too boomy bass
well the custom 8 does not.
but it does has a slight dip in the mids but in a real good way
it has plaenty of midrange body still but has that trademark PAF mid dip
like a seth or a original 57-59 gibson paf
BTW, some people beleive that the alnico 8 sounds exactly like a cermaic but i can assure you IT DOES NOT!

Where did you get the Alnico 8 mag from?

You should refer to it as the custom *your name* though, as how cool would it be to have a pickup with your name on it?

Why are the Alnico 8's so hard to get ahold of?
