I've got a dremel, but I worry about it's inability to control the depth of the cut and no router attatchment is available for this model (Bamp;D RTX series). A full size router, though, seems like rather overkill and too large a tool for such smallish work. Would something like this work:
Yes. The spiral saw is perfect for that kind of trimming, easy to control edge cut and depth. I used the 'original' Roto-Zip and agree, a router is overkill in this situation. And they are cheap enough. Good luck.
RotoZip Tele cut
If you have a lot of meat to remove, cut slats, tap the bottom with a chisel and they fly out clean.
I've never used a rotozip or my dremel to cut out a pickup slot... I just use my templates from stewmac and my full sized router..... In the past i have done a few pickup cut outs under pickguards with hand tools and have had great results!.... For a humbucker i drilled 4 holes.... one in each corner.... and then just chizzeled the wood out as best as i could and being extremely careful not to go down through the trem spring area... it did look good and right when i was done....

I've never done this, but don't they make a router base for Dremels? I know I've seen them.
By the way, I've used my Dremel for small mods to the pickup bay - just went really slow.
As far as I can tell, it depends on what model you have. Home Depot tells me that they don't sell a router attatchment for the MTX series from Black and Decker and Bamp;D list no such attachment on their site. If anyone knows of some sort of universal router base for demels, please let me know.

Serious you doing this routing yourself ?
I see guitar makers use those CNC machines, or by hand with EXTRA precision, a Chisel will be a fine tool for me
I have a quot;Dremelquot; brand dremel tool and the router attachment. Works perfect for me. I don't know of any universal attachments but I suggest doing a Google or Yahoo! search to see what comes up.
Hey Genius, you ask about a spiral saw and ya still wanna use a Dremel?

Plastic spoon from Mcdonalds
You're going to need a hammer for that screwdriver. I pefer a serated steak knife. Gives the whole guitar added character like quot;I'm dangerous, no really, you could get a splinter!quot;

plastic spoon really makes you look cool though
My personal choice is a standard router! Give me my Porter Cable model 690 and I am ready to do some routing!!!!
This would work good with a router base attachment

Oh ya the Porter Cable routers are nice.... i have a few of them. I have 3 different bases for them and one of them is amazing but it is starting to wear out on me... It's a D handle grip base.... has a large saw type D grip on one end and the standard ball grip on the other... Saddly the D handle has had a few accidents and plain useage has made it hard to set up right... once set up it works 10 times better for controll over the other 2 style of router bases i have for my PC Routers...

I just use a Dremel, works fine for me
