I am really digging on this amp! The one and only thing I don't like is how the low end can get a bit quot;flubby.quot; No complaints with the high end or the mids at all. I just want to tighten up the low end. Any suggestions are appreciated.
I'm pretty sure that amp has a Tube rectofier. The low end flubbyness
is a normal trade off in amps with tube recto's. A better speaker may
help, Or a SS recto plugin. I would pay a visit to Ted a email. He should be able to point you in the right direction.
He sells the SS recto plugs aswell as some of the best speakers.
Hmm, that copper cap at Weber sounds interesting. I've never heard of that before. Think I'll send an e-mail to Weber to find out more. Thanks for the heads up!!

So that is the difference between SS and Tube rectofiers. Tube recto has a less defined low end. I wonder if trying a 10quot; speaker would work better with the tube recto.
I've tried several speakers in mine, and I've settled on a Hellatone 30 from Avatar.
I also like the JJ power tubes in these, and they have a bigger bottom.
I think the DRRIs are great amps, but a little finicky.
6v6's in general have a flubby bottom. a new speaker isnt a bad idea and weber makes some good ones, depending on your volume needs keep sensitivity in mind. i havent tried the copper caps but they seem like a good idea
Its the 6V6 tubes and the tube rectofier both that contribute to flubby low end?

O.K. This is how I understand it (somebody more in the know correct
me if I'm wrong) The rectofier helps convert the AC current into DC
voltage. With a tube recto when you hit a note it cause's the voltage to
drop (or sag) but as the voltage returns it seems to make the note bloom.
This is why some player's like tube recto's. But the low notes seem to
suffer because they draw more current thru the tube and seem to
get flubby instead of bloomy.
The wealth of knowledge from this board's members STILL amazes me after a year of being here!!!
As usual, some excellent info,

Mike M., please let us know what happens, what changes you make. I'm interested to see what your results will be.
Thanks KMC.
IMO, the two quot;bestquot; speakers for a Deluxe Reverb are the Celestion G12H30 or Vintage 30.
The G12H30 will have a little smoother top end, a little more mids and a deeper/fuller sounding bass than the Vintage 30.
Either will make a GIGANTIC IMPROVEMENT in the tone of your DR amp and will clear up alot of the flubby bass response and make your amp seem like it has alot more perceived volume and output.
Personally, I would not bother with any other speaker than the G12H30 or Vintage 30.
The G12H30 is also amp guru Ken Fischer's favorite in a Deluxe Reverb.

Right now I am using an emminence speaker in it, but has been reocmennded to me to use a celestian vintage 30. The guy who recommended this is one hell of a player, and he uses a '66 BF Deluxe.. plugged straight in. He is one of the best players I Know. I will be changing mine as soon as I have the chance to pick one up! The emmenence is a good speaker but I have been experiencing the same kind of mushiness in the bottom. According to my friend this celestian eliminates a lot of it.

You'll love it Dave! The Vintage 30 has a little more bite to the treble and upper mids than the G12H30 and a slightly clearer tone...though a little less bass and mids than the G12H30. They are both superb in a DR, and I used my DR's with the Vintage 30 for quite a few years until Celestion reissued the G12H30. Now, the G12H30 is my fave. Lew
Curly mentioned the Hellatone 30 from Avatar. I've read that this is a G12H30 that's been broken in. True?
ill second the choice of the g12h-30 its a great speaker and works well in low powered tube combos

Very true. 100% in fact.
I bought one, and peeled off the quot;hellatonequot; label in the back. Sure enough, the original celestion label is still in tact and says g12h-30.
great deal from avatar!!!
Gear nuts must think alike. Am I the 4th or 5th person here that would put a Celestion G12H or Vin 30 in a DRRI? I expected everyone to be saying Jensen or Weber.
Great speakers, but almost nothing tightens up the low end better than a Celestion.
Okay, when Monday rolls around I'm gonna call Avatar and order the Hellatone 30. Since it's a broken in G12H30 and you guys have recommended it I figure what the hell, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for your help!
